This is driving me nuts! I have a USB>Serial adaptor to give me 2 rs232 ports on the PC. When not connected, the sound is perfect. When I connect the USB adaptor, the sound is broken up by tiny but noticable breaks. This never used to happen till I reinstalled 98. Anyone know why this is happening? Is it an IRQ problem?

Sounds like the USB-->serial adaptor might be eating up CPU cycles or you need to check out the IRQ settings for your devices.
