I have an external IDE HD enclosure with an IDE to USB interface. I want to take out the power supply board and replace it with a DC to DC converter so that I can avoid the use of a DC to AC inverter. Can anyone suggest a place to find what I need? The drive itself requires 12V (30mA to 2000mA) and 5V (280mA to 490mA) - the IDE to USB interface requires 5V (dont know the amp requirements, but it comes off the same 5V wires that go to the HD).

The Astec power supply that people are getting from www.mpja.com and www.meci.com (the latter was cheaper) should be able to handle that ok. Check the specs but it has both 12 and 5 volt outputs. It was formerly a Laptop power supply.

If I am not mistaken, this DC to DC converter will not work:

The drive requires 12V @ 30mA (standby) to 2000mA (peak for spin up). The DC to DC converter will only supply 12V @ .1A. That is far too little to supply power for spin up, correct?

Anyone know of a converter that will supply the needed amperage? Or is this not even a real issue? This is a learning experience for me...

If you already have DC-DC to power the computer, you can tap off of that. If not, the you can put something together using the LM7812 and 7805 regulators. They will supply up to 1.5A at 12 or 5V, respectivly. Take a look at the datasheets for thos regulators and you will find some simple schematics. You can also get a general idea on how to use them from the power supply circuits on my website at http://www.aaroncake.net/circuits
