Question Anyone using an FM tuner on their carputer instead of a head unit?

FM tuners are dirt cheap, and TV/FM tuners are only a little bit more. Since I'm changing out the whole system in my van, I'm curious about not having a head unit at all, and just plugging the sound output right into the amp. Anyone have this setup? Do you recommend it? Any suggestions? Thanks.
