Black screen during OS installation

I got a mini-itx based computer and I'm wanting to make my own little carputer.. I got it all mounted, but I'm having trouble installing the OS for some reason..

specs:

Via 1ghz m-itx mainboard
512 mb DDR memory
2.5" 40GB Harddrive
24x CD-rom

The problem is that under the OS installation the screen goes black. This happens at seemingly random places for example under the formating, file copying etc.

The screen goes black - but it doesnt turn itself of. The green diode saying that the monitor recieves a signal is lit. (its red when it doesnt)

I've tried both a WinXP CD and a Windows 2k CD and it happens under both installs.

I've tried to reset CMOS and turning off all power saving functions in BIOS.

According to the specs of the PSU I should be within the operational limits (with just one 2.5" HD and one 24x CD-ROM)

Anybody got an idea whats causing this??

regards,

Mr. Aurstad

Edit:

I can tell when the screen goes black, also the CD-rom and HD is powered down. Also the keyboard lights go black.

Still the PSU is ON and the fan on the cpu is running..

My guess is that your power supply is crapping out. If you have another one available, try that. The fact that you said it happens randomly, would lead me to believe it is an intermitant hardware failure. If it is a software issue, or hardware incompatability issue, the problem usually happens at the exact same point every time.
