Alpine Ai-Net to RS232 interface.

There has been some discussion over the years about interfacing to Alpine kit, namely with a view to allowing an Alpine head unit to control a custom made MP3 player (or other hardware).

As an offshoot from another project I'm involved with (Alpine/BMW interface) I will shortly be able to offer converter boards that convert between Alpine Ai-Net protocol and RS232.

Would anyone be interested in such a device? Assuming I were to go into production with a reasonable quantity, I would expect units to retail somewhere in the region of 30 to 50 UK pounds.

Please note that the Alpine Ai-Net protocol is /substantially/ different to RS232 so a processor and custom transceiver hardware is required for the conversion.

I am contemplating making available either a chipset or a small daughter board depending on interest.

Please contact me directly if you have any views.

Regards, Simon - spa@intravention.co.uk

what exactly is RS232?

is it still optical?

I found this on it: http://www.camiresearch.com/Data_Com..._standard.html

but it doesn't exactly make much sense to me

RS232 is IEEE1284, or Parallel, or LPT port

RS232 is Serial interface, also known as "EIA232 Standard" - it has nothing to do with LPT or parallel. It is your Com port!

Well I sure as hell do.

RS232 is NOT LPT, Printer, IEEE1284.

RS232 is a signaling standard used with
serial ports. It can come in many forms
and connectors, including both 25 and
9 pin serial (COM) ports.
