TFT fold out of dash LCD 6.4"

I'm wondering if there is a VGA only screen out there that folds out of the dash like the Pioneer AVX 7000, and Alpine 1000 series dash monitors?

If not, I would be interested in getting some made. I found heaps of people are demanding them, so I am discussing with an engineering mate about doing a batch of this sort of thing. It would be a 6.4" TFT with VGA input and servo controlled actuation, via the key, ie turn on car, screen folds out, turn car off, screen folds in etc.

It's just an idea at the moment, and I'm wondering what you guys think.

I was planning on this, until I realized that to fit it in the dash, I'd have to use a 6.4" screen.

I really want a 8.4 or 9.6

But it'd be cool none the less

I dont know of any. While I would love to see something like that I know that the price is going to be high on something like this. Also are these going to be standard DIN sized ? how about also making the casing with servos available for people that already have a screen that just would like to have them indash. Also I dont like that turn on the key screen pops out idea for a few reasons.
1. Many states have laws about video screens in the drivers view while they are driving (I dont know much about them but I think most commercial video screens have a wire that is suppost to go to the parking brake so that you can only have them on while you are parked(IIRC).
2. Sometimes I just like to listen to music and I dont want to have a big screen popping out at me.

Thanks for the respose. Yeah well I thought there wasn't much in the way of a fold out VGA input monitor out there already.

I think I will make one then, well at least give it a good go

It will be Single DIN but

moxnix : What I'm talking about is a 12V line that you apply power to, and whilst there is power on the wire, the screen is folded out. You could hook this to a switch, key or even the puter, so it only comes out when the PC is on. When the power is removed from the wire, the screen folds away.

I'm looking for alternatives to the Pioneer AVX 7000, as it seems the best ready made thing, but they all lack that VGA/XGA touch

Does anyone know of a screen (ie 6.4" TFT) over here in Oz? I think I'm going to have to order it from www.flat-panel.com otherwise.....

I remember that you were working on a VGA-to-RGB interface for the AVX-7000. Did this ever work out like you hoped?

Yeah it worked quite well indeed, it's just that I borrowed one to test it with, and then found out I still need the silly master unit ($900 Aus) just to allow the headunit to work, that means it was gonna cost about $3000 Aus just to get started, so I thought there must be a cheaper and better way. Also it's wide screen format meant that the whole screen wasn't used, or it worped the screen to fit in in, which did look crappy. It did do 800*600 res though, which is nice, but the magic cable you need to feed in RGB I can't seem to find anywhere anymore!!?

So It's time to get another method happening

Apart from that, it's the only thing holding me back from getting it in the wheels!

BJ: If you make one of these, i would totally be interested. I have a spare DIN and I would love a 6" screen. Dunno if I have enough room height wise though. (Might hit the center console after folding out)

is what i'm still thinking is maybe you could find a in din unit w/ a busted screen and pop in a VGA screen...might work...couldn't cost much more than the pioneer or something like that

well the other option is to hack a $2000 screen (avx 7000 or similar) and find the digital RGB lines and hook up, but even I don't have the cash to try that

I was wondering if you have finished the the lcd mounting brackets, because I am very interested in doing this. I don't even care if it is motorized. I am looking for something that can slide out and swivel up and down. I don't know how far you have come along, but give me some feedback on however it is coming. I went to Home Depot but the drawer slides are too long, and I need one abot 2 inches. Well thanks for the help. Please e-mail me with some information (PJB19@tampabay.rr.com)
