Post Would this motherboard make a good Car PC?

THis seems like a pretty small motherbaord but it does have 4 PCI slots.

Is this a fairly good deal?

My thoughts were the video would be good enough for a small LCD (With VGA to LCD converter of course) but you could use a sound card to improve the sound quality.

What do you guys think?

Pigseye: If you noticed, the auction ended about 8 hours after your first post. Therefore the picture and specs were gone. There is no need to post "anyone?" because the item was already sold. If you give this group at mp3car.com some more time to look at it I'm sure that you would have gotten a response.

Caliboy,
Actually the auction is over but the pictures and descriptions are still there.

Why do you say they are gone?

If you scroll down to the description you can read about the features the motherboard has and see what it looks like.

Finally, although the auction is over does not mean this company won't have another auction later so I just want to know what people think of the size and features of this motherboard and if it's worth $29 plus shipping.

Take a look again and let me know what you think of this board.

if the link doesn't work please let me know. It seems to be working fine for me even after several refreshes and on different PCs.

Thanks,
Pigseye

Don't see the point in getting a mobo without built-in tvout, unless you actually already have a VGA TFT.

Caliboy looks like jacka$$! Sorry Pigseye you are correct. The scroll down didn't work until I got home and looked at it. For a good tvout motherboard the shuttle sv-24 is real nice. That's what I'm thinking of getting, but it's $120.

Once again, sorry!

Caliboy,
Hey man, no problem. You have a good reputation and are generally very helpful. I figured you were having a bad day or had some kind of internet connection problem.

Thanks for the recommendation on the motherboard, but you're right, kind of steep at $120.

Hope you have a great holiday.

Pigseye
p.s. You are not a jacka$$.

This is the motherboard I am using and am very pleased with...

supermicro 370 SED

As it has onboard sound and TV-out I don't have to use any additional cards which saves space. More info on my site.. Wired Ride

AndyM,
All I can say is Wow! Beautiful installation and very very cool. Nice job.

Your site is neat to. You've laid it out very well and included appropriate text and pics. I do wish you had some pics on how you modified your head unit. That was a great idea.

I also like the STR you set up. Unfortunately I'm probably going to use an inverter for my first car PC so that's probably not an option for me. How much was the Keypower dc/dc power supply??

Again, great job and thanks for the insight on the motherboard. Very cool.

Cool

Pigseye,
Thankyou for your generous comments.

I have some more pictures that I am scanning and I will add in the next few days. As for the headunit...I will open that sucker up and take some pics for you. I don't have a digital camera so it may take a while but I will let you know when I add the pics. If you have any questions about the headunit mods feel free to ask and I will do my best to answer them.

If you email keypower they will be able to give you a price (they seem to cost less now than when I bought mine). It was not at all cheap but I think was worth every cent.

Cheers.
AndyM

Hi AndyM,
If your head unit is installed already, don't open it up to take pictures just for me. I just think it's neat when people find low cost solutions for the challenges they run into. It would have given you another chance to show off your technical prowess!

I'll shoot Keypower and email to get some quotes.

Thanks Again,
pigseye

Question

Hi AndyM,

did you find a way to prevent rebooting when you start the engine yet? I tried to build a tank circuit with some big electrolytic capacitors I already had ( http://www.mp3car.com/cgi-bin/ultima...c&f=9&t=000232 )
, but it didn't work (it actually worsened the problem). I either used the wrong kind of diode or small capacitors, so I would like to know the diode part # and capasitor's size.
I am asking you because (as you alredy know)we have the exact same setup and a similar sized car (engine>alternator>battery). :-)

Regards,
Dimitris

Pigseye,

My headunit is removable and the cover just pops off so removing and opening it is just a 10 second operation with no tools needed. I was wanting to add pics of the mods to my site anyway so thankyou for motivating me to do so. I'm off to buy a film now.
