Question RAM Slot Problem: $10 Syntax S8601MP from TigerDirect

I got in on the $10 Syntax - S8601MP - VIA Socket 370 microATX motherboard deal at TigerDirect.com
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...SRCCODE=BEFREE

However, I'm having problems getting one of the RAM slots to work. I am testing it with two Crucial 128MB sticks of PC133. They work fine in another machine. They work fine seperatley in one of the slots. They do not work together. The manual states that I can use 2 x 512MB.

Has anyone elxe experienced this? Did I get a bad board?

I should have listened to the naysayers earlier. The RMA policy involves talking to mnfr tech support (which I may do, although it's long distance) and then shipping it insured back to Tiger. COnsidering shipping may run me about $8-10, I think I'll just keep it and try and get my rebate. Best case they'll give me my cash back and I'll be out 2x shipping charges. Or, I'm out $10 + shipping (providing I get the rebate) and I still have a board I can use as a server.

You probably have a bad board. Not surprising if it's from tiger direct. They're scam artists that fill just enough real orders to be legal.

I'd just trash the damn thing. if it only cost you $10, it's not going to be worth the trouble (or expense) of getting it fixed.

True, I probably won't fix it... but I won't trash it. I can still use one of the RAM slots and use the board as a server.

If you were going to trash it I was going to offer to buy it off of you Nothing wrong with a partially diasbled board, as long as the functions you need still work.

Is your memory single or double-sided? I remeber something about some boards not being able to use 2 x 512MB (double-sided sticks), but would handle 2 x 512MB (single-sided), or 1 x 512MB (double sided).

Can you put either stick in either slot, and have it work? It's just the two sticks at the same time, right?

Hmmm thats an interesting idea. But it seemed like both sticks only worked in one of the slots. I'll do some more testing and re-post. Thanks for tip.

Yeah, no matter what memory you use, if it's only one stick, it probably has to go in Slot 0.

Still might be that single/double-sided thing.
