hey everyone, i need some help here. This is the story, and then the question:

So i had an M9000 I was planning on putting in my C134 case, i had XP loaded and SP 1 installed (on my 20 GB Hitachi Travelstar HDD) and was all ready to go (working on mounting), when my M9000 died (i saw a little smoke out of the Firewire port, and then nothing).
I bought a new M9000 off Ebay (thank you to whoever posted that link for me, if you are reading), and when it came in the mail i decided to do a real install and put my MoBo in the glove box and stick the Arise PSU (im getting there) behind the screen in the dash.
I am all installed, and when i boot up i get the bios screen, both the IDE devices load (slimline DVD and Laptop HDD), and mem checks out ok. Then i get the XP splash screen (with the "progress" bar), and then i get a black screen.....and thats that. So i reboot and this time i get the list of options "start in safe mode, safte mode with networking, safe mode with command line, last known good configuration, normal". So i pick safe mode, and windows starts fine (in safe mode), everything is how i left it. So i shutdown gracefully and try to reboot normally, same problem as the first time. Then i tried last known good configuration, but apparently it thinks that the black screen after the XP logo is a "good configuration" because thats what i got.

What do i do? Any ideas? The problem first happened on my Lilliput screen, so i thought the new mobo might be loading VGA drivers the lilli couldnt handle, so i dragged a real moniter out there, then i did all the above trouble shooting. I do have a copy of XP pro and could install it but i would really rather not, since then none of my files would be on there and because i had it all set the way i wanted it.

As for the Arise PSU (None), it works fine, but does not survive grank as far as i can tell. My caveat: I am powering it off the Radio power line, and there is a distinct possibility my car cuts that line during crank. Once i get this all squared, i will test it out with a multimeter and find out whats going on.

Any advice is much appreciated...this is the only system i am running XP on, so im not used to any quirks it may have.

"Last Known Good Configuration" is a silly and useless feature. It sets a "good config" right after you "login". If you skip the login(auto), you've just then voided any chance to tell XP it's a "bad config" by shutting down. So yea, it's useless.

Boot to safe mode, remove any, and all video drivers.

Restart normally(no safe mode), reinstall your video drivers. Repeat.

On a side note, what is the power rating of that Arise PSU?

You mentioned it is powered from the radio power wire which is really not that great at supplying 10Amps and more (meaning the wire is probably 18 gauge and any current draw of 10 amps and more will result in a voltage drop at your power supply).

the rating is 100W and it says 18 amps, 30 inrush. The power wire for the radio is 16 ga, i wonder if that will be more acceptable?

I would run dedicated power from the dist block, but i am short on time.

UPDATE: win XP now starts (after using the rollback feature to take it back a few months), and no longer recongizes the second IDE drive (CD-rom), but is kind enought to ask me if i want to load the drivers, ON A CD. Thanks microsoft.

Time to cut my losses and re-install XP! Yay!.....

Does the radio stay on through the whole crank?


That wire is way too small, I think that 12 gauge would be the absolute minimum for those kind of amps (18 that is, not even the 30.)

I cant remember if the radio stays on during crank (i will check when i retrieve my CDs from the HU. I know i should use bigger wire (i will change it in a few weeks, no time now), but my thoughts were that since ALL this is powering is the MoBo, 2.5" 5400 RPM HDD, slimline DVD drive, and USB soundcard, it would be okay for now. There is a 20 amp fuse already in place for the radio, so i was thinking i would be okay for a week or two.

I used the mini-itx power calculator, and it said 40 watts max, on DVD playback and all.

What do you think?

Tried that, all the troubleshooting i was describing happened on my 19" CRT. but then i got windows to work, but it didnt recognize the second IDE, so now i'm going to scrap this install of XP and start clean.....

Someone give me your input on the power wire situation (see above). Obviously it is not optimal, but is it safe (for a few weeks?). I have tranfered all my files from the carputer in safe mode and the PSU has been runing now (with the HDD spinning) for an hour and a half, no problem. It is 16 GA wire from teh radio harness, and the fuse that the radio is controlled by comes stock at 20 amps.
