powering a USB hub

hey guys

i have a linksys hub that i want to throw in the car but it requires an exteral power source: +5V tip positive it looks like. how do you people who have powered hubs in teh car power them? Just tap any +5V off the ATX? cut-n-solder?

Thanks in advance

I would use the 5v part of the sproggy psu, but extending the atx wires should do equally fine, use fuses and consider interference

Yeah, just use one of the hard drive power cables. The red is 5v+, black is ground. It should then power on with the pc.

I'm pretty sure you don't need a fuse in that spot. If you did, you'd need one on every peripheral you used.

you don't NEED one and it is completly optional. However considering that you will probably have a substantial run on that wire you may want to, just incase the wire ever shorts. Don't get too fancy youll have the iron out anyway just get a lil fuse and solder it right in line. Put some shrink tubing over it and feel good knowing that youve covered all your bases.
