FM modulators, I've heard, tend to have crappy sound, but that's certainly one way you could go. You could also just buy a cheap-*** tape deck with aux in, since you'd have a CD player on the portable anyway. Or it's also possible your CD player has an interface on the back for a CD changer, and you might be able to adapt it to accept line-level signals from RCA plugs or the like. You'd have to ask a professional about that route though. I think you can also get aftermarket amps that have dual inputs, as well.
