Okay, this can't be right.... Can it?
I looked at the specs on these Bulgin Switches (with the cools LED ring) and it says "Max. Rating - 50mA @24VDC"......
Does that mean if I use this as a main power cutoff switch for the PSU which will have about 8A @ 12VDC going through it, I will melt the switch????
I mean really, these are hefty looking switches, I can't believe they can only handle 50mA @ 24 VDC, that is 0.0012 Watts.....

Yeah, I thought of that, but I am so sick of wiring up relays.... I got so many frigging relays in this setup now.... it will probably sound like a click factory when I turn it on....
Maybe just try it out and see if it smokes.... $12... I have burned up more expensive things that that....

50mA - 8A.. that's not like "Oh, it's ALMOST there.." That's 16x the rated amount! I wouldn't throw away $12 on nothing just like that. Go for the relay, man.

So Banderon, did you ever find any switches that look like BMW switches? It seems like this place would do the lettering/stencil (maybe they can do it "reverse video" rather than just the black text on the lighted button).

I'm a noob, so bear with me.....but what I want is to have a push-button (the Bulgin's look great) to START the carputer, and then have the carputer powerdown when the engine is turned off (a one way switch in other words...only to power on, not power off).
Would these bulgin buttons do this? I noticed it said momentary switch.....is that what this means?
If not, where can I find a button to do this, or how can I make this button do this? Thanks guys!

Yes the Bulgins will do this with an ATX PSU. Momentary means when it is pressed it creates the connection as long as you hold it down and when you let it go it acts as an open.

I am a little confused still about what momentary switches do. I didi some searching online with not too many results.
So when you push a momentary switch, it makes contact (and in this case would complete the circuit to turn on the carputer), correct? But when the switch is released, would the carputer stay on, or would it then shutoff because the circuit is now open?
And just to clarify further, this switch could not be also used to power down the carputer, correct?

all current (read post AT) power supplies and motherboards only need a quick short of two pins to turn, and kepp on, a computer. So, to take a momentary switch, like the Bulgen or any other switch you have in an ATX flavored case, press and release it and the computer will turn on and stay on.
Now to answer your question about turing the computer off by the same switch. The answer is yes as long as it's setup correctly. You can setup, in the OS, to have the power button do a number of things. I have mine setup so that when it is pressed and released the computer will shut down properly. i.e. close all apps and run the shutdown process. I also have the BIOS setup so that when I hold the power button for 4 sec. it totally cuts power and does a dirty shutdown. This is only for when the computer locks up.

Alright, all this makes sense, for a PC, but what about a laptop? How would I extend the on/off button from the laptop to say, my dash? And I know which options you are speaking of Defiler, and I would use them. I mean, laptops take how long to boot up? Get in my car, turn the ignition, press the button and go. Simple as that, have certain programs to start on boot, touch screen to start the muisc and wammo!
But how to extend the button? Any ideas?
