I was looking at a couple of in-dash aftermarket radios in my local electronics store, but I didn't buy because both units said there may be long waits for initialization if I had burned a disc with more than 7-8 directories or containing several hundred songs. Please help me out. If it takes a long time for a mechanism to read a MP3 CD that has a complex or large file structure, shouldn't I limit my directories to 7 or so and have fewer than 200 songs? How many directories and files do you guys usually burn on your MP3 CDs?

I couldn't even fit 200 songs on a 700mb cd.. At an average of 5mb per song (@192kb/sec), I'd be able to fit about 140..

I would just seperate the sounds by artist or album subdirectories unless you are doing all singles.. where you might do genre sub-dirs.

I generally go for the full album approach.. There's more than one way to do this though, and no "right" way..

Thanks but how many directories or sub-directories do you and the average MP3 burner use? There seems to be a direct link between number of directories and tunes tied to long inititalization times for the radio.

ive never heard of the long initialization with just 7-8 directories. what ive seen is long times for directories that are 7-8 deep and usually that can take a while.

Thanks but that still implies that more directories lead to longer radio initialization times, probably as a function of how much RAM the radio has???? When you burn your MP3 CDs, how many directories do you use, how complex, and how many tunes can you, or should I try to get onto a disc?

Well, I'm downloading all my music at my work, we've got a very fast -dedicated- connection to the internet here.
At home I only have access to the internet trough a 56k6 modem, just because I don't have any other option like (a)dsl or Cable.

When I want to take these mp3s home I burn them on a cd. And -almost- only download full-albums I usually get 10 or 11 (depends on the album) albums on 1 cd. Which means that there will be 10 or 11 directories on the cd.

When I download single songs I usually put them all toghether in a directory called 'Various' or 'Top40' or something.

But I usually get 10 or more directories on a CD-R
