You'll be happier with the additional space.

You bet! The item is arriving tomorrow at noon, so I'm currently partitioning the drive and uploading the MP3s.
All of them! Yay!

Sweet!
Two partitions - one for music, the other one for programs/GPS maps and such!
All-in-all I now have 47 GB!

Oh boy, does that feel great or what! Almost feels like sex to see all your MP3s fit on one drive! No more deleting, no more fighting for free space, no more thinking twice before ripping another CD! Best of all - I can now get one of those Routis softwares and load all the maps to my carputer and have GPS on a big screen! Yay! All for just $20

Yeah. It's cool and everything.. but it sucks power like a friggin' plasma TV! I had to disconnect my precious radar and Pocket PC to power up that sucker! Gotta do some power management later today :-/

i went out and got the laptop hdd encloser for $20...unfortunately, it uses 2 USB ports...one to power, one for data. but it requires no drivers unless using Win 98 or below :-) formated at FAT32 to be read by whatever.
glad to hear your setup is working well:-)

Well, it's not really perfect you know..
There are some problems.
I have to shut down the external HD's power to turn on the laptop, then I have to switch the power back on.
It also added more background noise to my already big collection of interference sounds.
Even the ground loop isolator is not strong enough.
I'm thinking about getting a more powerful inverter. Mine is a 120W, and today I saw a 160W for $40.
If I get that I might get rid of the power problems.

Okay people, this is it! I'm going to connect a desktop HD to a laptop by making a custom IDE adapter! Wish me luck!

I did the adapter and I'm sure I got all the connections right (100% sure), however the system freezes before I even have a chance to get into BIOS. Could it be possible that the drive is simply too big to be the main hard drive of this ancient system?

extremely probable. a 233 pentium system i had was limited to 8.5gb, no idea what your laptop might be limited to.

Sh1t. Well, screw it, I've wasted several days on all this.
I'll wait for the new motherboard to arrive and then just use a PCMCIA enclosure.

Well, it seems like the enclosure might had something to do with frying my PCMCIA slots.
In any way, just to be on the safe side I ordered a PCMCIA USB 2.0 cardbus (with a NEC chipset ) and an external 3.5" USB HD enclosure (it can actually be converted to a 2.5").
Damn, my system is now getting pretty expensive
