Would there be a problem with mounting an actual monitor in the car? If so, how about a tv with the appropriate video card?

If you have room to put a big monitor in your car you can but, it would probably look very unappealing. The people who put the LCDs in their car don't do so b/c of the price b/c they are much more expensive, they do so b/c of the size however if you have an extra cubic foot or 2 then you would still have to worry about the power draw and how you would supply power but, as evident in this forum if you can dream it, it can be done.

There is actually another little problem. The surgepower drawn by a normal screen is actually fairly high (i have blown 30 A fuses trying to use a regular monitor).

Btw i was using it to check my system, not to run of, but i had to draw a power line from the house to be able to power the line.

Does anyone know how much surge power a 17" screen would draw (just to settle my curiosity)

Ive actually seen a 15 in monitor setup in a rusted out 1991 honda civic. They completely pulled the front seat and built a box on the floor that that molded into the dash. the monitor was aimed at the driver. In the trunk there was an E-machine mounted to the rear deck and on the back window was a GPS antenna. The install was done at Circuit City for a Circuit city employee. This setup was somewhat cool but would not fit for those that date or are married! Cant imaginge having a friend or friends with you and having them all site in the back...... But to answer your question YES it can be done. Well actually I know of 2 hondas with a monitor in them the othere removed the monitor housing and removed the glovebox. Then he atempted to build it into the dash. This sort of worked. However it Gets very hot and you would have to be careful what you cover it in.

Your average 17" monitor draws around 180W continuously, but up to 500W surge on start up.

15" or 14" monitors are better suited, as they draw around 120W.

However, there are small 6" monitors made for point of sale applications. These are standard VGA (640x480) monitors mounted on a small pole. Some even run on 12V. Pretty expensive though...I just looked in my catalogue and a 10" monitor is $780 wholesale. They also come with a touch screen for just a little more...

My idea was to use a 13 inch (I think - model is Acerview 11D). I already have it and don't use it. I have a fairly large car and would build a custom console so I can remove the "case" on the monitor. I can install some fans to dissipate heat if needed. I'd be able to turn it off if needed and it will be big for use with games/dvd/etc...

Thanks, Aaron - The "50 continuous" is in the right ballpark, as it's labeled "0.5A" (115VAC x 0.5A = 57.5 Watts), but it probably doesn't really hit the .5A mark.

The 100 surge I can live with, as long as I turn the monitor on before the PC.
