Cheap and VERSATILE the motherboard..but is it good ??

I wouldnt buy it on the simple fact that the web site puts this crappy "PC Chips" java scrolly thing next to your mouse pointer. Whats the deal with that?!

I was going to use that exact same board. Seems good, has everything for a nice compact install. I now accquired a box, so i dont need it, but i cant see it being bad, maybe the on-board sound could be ordinary. Any one used this board?

In general, I have found that PCCHIPS boards have their place. Typicially in office machines, maybe school library's, etc.

I have now had two PCCHIPS's boards in the car, the first one I physically broke (doh!) and the sencond (BookPC) was sold as it got flakey.. The problem with it was.. No slots to replace stuff.

This has slots, and it's cheap.. Why not. I dunno how it would do for playing DVD, but nothing a DVD decoder card couldn't fix.

One thing to note, with any board that uses shared memory for Video, you are going to see a decrease in system performance. Usually in all the area's people like us care about.. Video. Slower processors with a nice video card will play things like ASF and DiVX (which require gobs of CPU time to decode) than machines with Faster procs and intergrated video.. One note on that statement, if you're throwing a 700 mhz cpu at the problem, it's probably not going to be a big deal.

As far as I know, Ali Aladdin chipset is full of bugs. They did 5 revisions on it with no success. They lack performance across the board and some of them refuse to work with AGP video cards.
Via Pro chipsets are much better alternative in terms of performance and compatibility. Of cause, they are not perfect too. I would stay away from Ali Aladdin—it’s pure garbage. That’s why K7 never attained the same performance as Celeron processor from Intel.

I bought this board.
The video performance is evil.
If you are planning on doing anything video related like DIVX I would say forget about it.
There are other boards with integrated video that perform a lot better.
I use a gigabyte one now with integrated trident blade 3d.. its still shared video memory but the divx playback performance is way way better.

It should be other way around: That’s why K6-2/k6-3 (NOT K7) never attained the same performance as Celeron processor from Intel.. You got me, Meatballman!

I have this board in my player with no problems. Video performance sucks, but hell, if your just playing MP3s it doesn't matter one bit. One thing though: this motherboard requires a power good signal. If you are going to run an Arise DC-DC converter (or other DC-DC) you will have to rig up a small circuit to provide it.

I am wondering how can you do it. I have a similar mobo with Arise DC-DC converter. The mobo does have power but could not power on b/c of the power good signal. Please if you could give me a detail instruction and list of parts that I need to build the circuit. Thanks

Don't Use PC Chips Boards If You Want A Stable Machine, They Are Never Anygood For Long Periods Of Time. I Am A Computer Tech At A Big Local Computer Store. We Have The Worst Luck With PC Chips Boards. They Have Bad Driver Support For Newwer OS's Like 2k And ME. Also Forget A Warrenty With Them. Like Someone Said They Are For Dumb Termanals And Schools.
