Post What's involved in installing flip down screens?

I'm going to be installing 2 1U computers in the trunk of my car, and 2 15" screens. I'd like to make a custom wooden housing for them and make it flip down, but I don't know how they attach to the headliner. I'm going to have both screens on the passenger side, front and rear seats. I'll probably build in some kind of drop and swivel for the front monitor, too. Also, how hard is it to run cable through your headliner?

For a while I was thinking of having a flip down and I talked to some car stereo places to find out how they do it. Here is what they all told me. (or at least what I can remember)

You have to pull down the liner, which entails taking down all of the parts (visors, seatbelts, etc) that are in contact with the liner. Once the liner is down you mark out where exactly you want the screen and make a small hole for it, or for a screw to go through. Then you have to get some kind of "plate" that will sandwich between the roof and liner. That plate is what actually gets screwed into. The plate also must be sufficiently large so that it distributes the load of whatever you are hanging, so that you don't end up with a saggy liner.

Thanks.. That doesn't sound too hard. I can remove all the stuff up top no problem, but the liner is what's going to be the pain. Anyone know what you normally have to do to take that down? Is it a snap on deal or is it glued up there? (for newer cars)

I know on most older cars here in australia it has like long bars which go from one side of the car to the other and you have to pop it out but once its gets old sometimes it gets verry brittle

Most likely what you will need to do is take off all of the side panels, ie the ones that run down the front windshield, rear windshield, and the middle divider if it is a 4 door. Then remove that hand holds and visors, after those are removed it should just fall down because the sides, hand holds, and visor hold it up. Just be careful doing it as the hand holds sometimes suck and have weird ways of connecting to your roof.

Yep.. It's what I got.. but I might be wanting to sell them. They're both regular desktop computer flat screens. One of them is in working condition right now, and the other needs the lights replaced along with the inverter board.

If you can not get the other one fixes, let me know. The company I work for full time is looking for a dead flat panel to use for photography
