XMPCR, RadioShark, and HD Radio vs. RIAA

All of these products make the RIAA very nervous, whether they admit it or not.

These devices all get artist/song info over the air and are perfect for making MP3s, even though the quality of XMPCR and RadioShark are worse than just ripping from a CD.

I'm sure this is why the RadioShark is on permanent 'available soon' status and there never will be a HD Radio with any kind of a non-encrypted data port, or audio over the USB port. Yes there are FM products available that do audio over USB, but as far as I know none of them have RDS capability to get song info. There are services for getting song info after they have been recorded, but these are not as fool proof as RDS data.

The product/adapter for the Cadet being developed by Seth will most likely also incur the wrath of the RIAA.

The XM Direct mod being talked about by Hybrid poses the same risk as the XMPCR.

XM will have to stop this product also, or somehow encrypt their data streams from these devices, so that anyone reverse engineering them is in violation of the DMCA, which seems to be the only way the RIAA can keep on charging outrageous prices for CDs. Let's not even start talking about the INDUCE act or it's weaker offspring that will most likely be passed into law.

By the way, I think the work going on here to promote car computers is fantastic, and in no way do I wish to see any of it stopped.

Just a quick little update....XM has already dis-continued the XMPCR....about 15 minutes after reading that article announcing that I checked Ebay and sure enough those units are now going for upwards of $400.

Heh....wish I would have gotten in on this when they were readily available.

thought I would linky the site I read this on.

It's not a Cadet adapter anymore. Far better solution .

I promise not to tell.

I'm glad to here a far better solution is in the works.

Hope to see it soon, I'm sure I'll be getting a couple, but not to create MP3s from my local Crapchannel stations.
