Need Desktop HD to laptop Mobo Connector

Where can I find a connector that will allow me to use a desktop HD to connect to the laptop Mobo? I don't mean to use an external, I need something to boot the OS with. (yes i read that 2.5's use less power and space, but I only have $50 in my carputer so far, keeping it budget-simple. Besides I am upgrading my vehicle's charging system to maintain a higer more constant voltage level. And I want a 7200 rpm HD.

mini 44 pin (laptop Mobo) IDE to standard 44 pin (desktop HD) IDE

Or else I have to do this:
http://hypertext.rmit.edu.au/~blogs/...es/000315.html
will the laptops mobo supply a desktop HD with enough voltage? It's IDE right? just diff connectors?

Also, how do I determine how many ampere's my power supply will draw?

my vehicle stock alternator is 105 amp
vehicle and current draw 60 for vehicle and 20-30 for sound setup. (roughly)

I would just get external usb case for the drive (~$10-$20) and go in through usb

oh you don't want an external ... it may be the case that your laptop will not recognize larger drives than it came with unless there are bios flashes for the mobo.

There are 7200rpm laptop drives .. I just got 5400rpm 16MB cache drive for my toshiba and I did see 7200rpm ones

Yup, your lappy won't put out enough.

I thought that the laptop was actually 18v and that I will need to run a series of in-line resistors in order to bring the current down to 12v. So you all are saying it is 5v; that is no problem. If it's only 5v, I can run a seperate power supply in order to power the desktop HD. I have access to a few desktop HD's. I don't want to spend money on a laptop HD. Does anyone know where a connector might be, otherwise I will have to make one.

Or, as you all say, simplest would be adding an external via usb... I need a HD to boot my OS from. Your saying that I can boot my OS from an external USB drive? It will only be usb 1.1 then, right? Cuz that is what my laptop is. I can't use a pci -mca card for USB 2.0, because it will only recognize the card after the OS boots up... or do I even have that option with a laptop. I mean, do they even make 2.0 cards for laptops? I am not familiar with laptops at all.

If your laptop is too old, it won't boot from USB either. Yes, they do make PCMCIA USB 2.0 cards. They run somewhere around $50 for something decent.
