Again, we appreciate the comments and ideas. Our design team is wrestling with other stakeholders while trying to provide the MP3 products that many people want to use. Real user input is a must here and all of the dialoge above is important. The Visteon MP3 design team is investigating a number of potential designs and look at new technology as well. So keep the notes coming and I will get them into the design team discussions!

I'd like a touchscreen VFD (not TFT LCD) that shows the song name, and has a built in eq that you can manupulate by sliding your finger on the EQ bars on the screen.

What would be cool like an LCD screen (at least 4 inches) and then have some audio inputs and video inputs so you can watch dvds on the head screen. And have a removable hard drive.

For your product to truly be successfull, you are going to need some design and implementation effort. First of all, a text lcd is a must. The difference in the hand held cd players from first generation to second generation was all about id3 tags and filename display. Second, understand that burning a cd full of mp3's for a novice will be a daunting task. You will have to deal with multiple burning software programs, and the person burning will have to put the correct type of file format, otherwise I am sure your player won't be able to play the cd. The mp3 car market currently is not meant for novice users, and to make a player that support's novice users would just kind of be silly to me. At this time I really would not be so worried about supplying an easy mp3 cd player, but an easy way for people to get the mp3's to the cd player. Sorry for rambling.

ok. the idea is to have MP3's on CD's. the user burned there mp3's onto a cd in data format, great - IF THEY HAVE A BURNER! i think that you are overlooking the fact that NOT every household in every developed country has a cd-r/w! I only just got my first one. and why would people spend $x on your product to play songs from cd's taht they had to burn, when they could burn them onto an audio cd, and listen to them in any cdplayer around?

hornet, not to defend this guy at all but the whole purpose of putting mp3's on a cd is that you can fit well over 100 on a disc verses like 12 in regualar audio format. I mean thats like having over twelve cd's on one disc. Less work changing cd's.

On your comment about not everyone having cd burners... If you are going to buy such a thing as a in dash mp3 player why wouldnt you pop the 100 bucks to buy a cdrw drive? thats really not that much. Besides 90% of new computers even come with a cdrw drive! so to consider the general public having disc writing technology its a safe bet. Besides even if you dont have one... how many people do you know that has one and would burn you cds of mp3's?

Cool

Lots of good design comments, so keep them coming even though you may notagree with non hand built MP3 radios. Our design team is well aware of the various types of software and the issues involved with burning MP3 CDs. We have been actively testing our mechanism trying to provide a system that will work for most configurations. As for the visual displays, we are emphasizing driver safety AND MP3 usability. Since one group of users wants ID3 tags and text displays, we are examining ways to provide that functionality on CD or HD based applications while limiting driver distraction and enhancing driving safety. And as for the burner issue versus copying raw audio, The CES show has all sorts of MP3 applications being integrated into home audio and video systems, with detachable transportable MP3 players at their heart, not to mention Internet audio that will use streaming MP3 and other technologies. Plus many computers now come with prepackaged CD burners at a slight additional cost. MP3 life is just starting to get interesting, as far as the hardware, all sorts of hardware.

Another essential feature you will need is some type of way to scroll through these mp3's and know what song is what. If you are driving, it is currently nearly impossible with the aiwa and kenwood mp3/cd car players to get to the song you actually want. Most of the time my friend just turns it on random. So I would say, if you really want this unit to stand out, the two most important factors would be the ease of use to get the cd made and working and be functional in your cd player (perhaps by custom burning software or better yet as most people use napster make a plugin for it) and finding the song you want while driving. I still prefer to make my own unit as I can make it much more complex and customizable, but I understand where you are coming from trying to introduce an mp3 based player to the novice consumer market.
