XMDirect Digital Audio Output ?
Hello Folks,
I am new member of the Forum and I am impressed with the technical expertise of Forum members.
From my short visit to this Forum I am aware that there are Forum members who are well versed in the workings of the XM Satellite radio receivers.
Now that using the XMDirect as a PCR is a viable option is it possible to modify the XMDirect for optical an/or coaxial digital audio output?
I am aware that at one of the XM Satellite Forums they offer both an optical and coaxial digital audio output mod kits for the XMPCR but I am unaware if these mod kits will work for the XMDirect. I also believe that these digital audio output kits are overpriced at $75 bucks.
I am hopping that someone can provide a schematic and parts list for the components necessary to build optical an/or coaxial digital audio output for the XMDirect. I believe that there other Forum members who are also interested in modifying their XMDirect for digital audio output but don’t possess the electronic expertise would like to see simple to follow detailed information on exactly how to do that. The XMDirect appears to have more space inside the metal box than the XMPCR so I believe the digital audio output modification doesn’t need to be as compact as the XMPCR and would be easer to accomplish. I hope someone that has the expertise and knowledge on how to modify the XMDirect for optical an/or coaxial digital audio output will be gracious and have the time to provide the necessary information.

Although i don't have this Direct or PCR i AM interested in the development of this. I do remember reading somewhere that the kits that they sell for the PCR arent compatable with the Direct untis becasue of a voltage difference.

I don't think it would be to hard to overcome the voltage problem. So I think it is very possible to do, note I don't have one to test with so this is just my opinion.

I don't know an reason it would not work, the optical or coax output connects directly to the xm tuner. This tuner is the same in all xm receivers, I have seen links where people installed the mod on a skyfi also. I have a direct and can say that the voltage should not cause any problem since they just convert it from 12V to 5V on the PCB. Since the direct is made to work in a car they built it for 12V input. I thought someone mentioned that the XM Direct puts out 7V and that it could fry the digital mod. Any way to verify this info.

Yea... that was the post that i read. I have no way to validate it and hope that i am not spreading roumers

Hello Folks,
I thank you for the help you folks are providing and it is greatly appreciated.
Perchance could someone that has a XMDirect and can power it up check the voltage on pins #1 and #5 of the “tin can” to confirm exactly what voltage is present there. If pins #1 and #5 are not the correct pins to be using to power the DIT4096 please correct me and suggest the correct pins to use. I am a novice in this area and I have never attempted to modify a XM receiver before so please bear with me while I get up to speed on this stuff.
I have check the spec sheet for the DIT4096 digital audio transmitter and the maximum input voltage allowed is 5.5 volts. If in fact the voltage on pins #1 and #5 of the “tin can” are higher than 5.5 volts would it be possible to place a LM7805 power regulator in the power in circuitry to step-down the input voltage to the DIT4096 to 5 volts? If this is not the correct way to provide the necessary voltage could someone provide information on how get the proper voltage to power the DIT4096.

Pin 1 to pin 5 measure 4.99 v on my Commander when running off a wall wart at 12.5 v.
I also am trying to get USB hooked up.
Waiting on a USBMOD3 to arrive.

Coaxial Digital Audio Output ?
Hello Folks,
I believe with your help I have acquired enough information for me to build the Optical Digital Audio PCB for the XMDirect. I thank you for the information you folks have provided.
I would also like to install coaxial digital audio output to the XMDirect. I have been unsuccessful in locating any meaning information on a schematic or a component parts list for the coaxial digital audio output modification.
Perchance can anyone point me in the right direction to obtain this information?

Coaxial Digital Schematic
Hello Folks,
I finally found a schematic on how to wire Coaxial Digital from the DIT4096. The Data Sheet for the DIT4096 indicates all I need is to connect in series pin #18 to a 10 pf capacitor, 300 ohm resistor, through a 2:1 transformer and back to pin #17 and wire the secondary side of the transformer to a S/PDIF Coaxial Connector.
If interest I have enclosed a copy of schematic.
