Dvd and hard drive on same cable question

Hello,
I've got a epia-v 800mhz mb (with a one ide and one floppy connector), so i'm forced to put both the harddrive and the dvd on the same cable. Unfortunately my 2.5 hd (ibm travelstar) and slim dvd player (tried a toshiba and one from my gateway, i believe it's a hitachi) won't play nice together:

When the toshiba dvd and hd are together, the toshiba shows up as a slave but the hd disappears.
When the hitachi dvd player and hd are together, the hitachi shows up as the master, and the hd is nowhere to be seen.

By itself the hd (with no jumpers set) shows up just fine, same with the dvd players. The hd has provisions to be jumped as a device 0 (default, no jumper), device 1, or cable select. I've tried it with device 1, but not yet with cable select.

I've been able to successfully use a 3.5" hd, set as master, in place of the little travelstar, and the travelstar still works in my laptop, so i don't think it's a bad hd.

Anyways, my question is, what ARE the slim dvd players by default (as far as factory setting to salve, master, cs, etc.)? Do most laptops just have two ide channels to avoid this situation?

Thanks for any help you can give. I've tried a few different ide adapters, in case the ones i had were bad.

Try just having the slim CD drive attached and then enter the bios to see whether it is picked up as Master or Slave.

Then, you should be able to jumper your 2.5" HDD to be the opposite and then they should be able to be used together.

If this doesn't work, you could try looking for a firmware update for the CD drive which can change it's Master/Slave setings.

As it is hard to jumper select SLIM CD drives you have to jumper the HD, I have had Slim CD's default as master and slaves. You plug in the CD only. Boot the comp. Go into BIOS setup for the comp and see what it thinks the CD is. The take the HD and jumper it accordingly.

Note***** some hard drives have a setting for Master with NO Slave and Master With Slave. If your is one of those make sure you jumper it correctly if it is to be the master. *****
