Broken LCD panel

Oh no !

I had my LCD panel fully working, but in a sort of temporary arrangement. When I was wiring it up to a permament stripboard (rather than just soldering the wires together), something went pop and part of one of the three black resin blobs from the back of the panel came away.

Now the backlight works, but I there are no characters. Something has obviously shorted between pins 1,2 or possibly 3.

Can this thing be fixed, or am I looking at another trip to my electronics supplier ?
