interesting idea
hi im new here and im not sure this is the best place to ask this questions but this forum seems to be gifted with some pretty clever individuals so heres my idea..... I happen to be one of the lucky purchasers of an apex dvd player with mp3 capability that i picked up for 30 bux at walmart, the other night it cuaght on fire and i thougt it was a gonner, so i cracked it open and inspected the parts. underneath the hood it had simply laid out a powersupply in the left rear cornner on its own pcb board, then it had the dvd rom in the front, a pcb board that held the ir port for the remote control in the front of the case, and lastly it had a seperate pcb board that had the decorder chip (made by nvida interestingly enough) and the video output controls on it to the right of the case. the decoder was connected to the dvd-rom via an ide cable. i isolated the part that cuaght on fire to the powersupply so i went and found an old power supply from an atx pc case and hooked it up accordingly to the voltages each device needed. the voltages ere conviently labeled on the decoder board and the dvd rom used the same power as a pc dvd rom... it worked out i could watch dvds again... however this is my question, since the power supply matched perfectly im thinking of finding a harddrive formating it to what ever format needed and installing it inplace of dvd rom, would this even function? it might be interesting to hack the decoder and find out how to get it to work with and control a harddrive becuase if thats the case it could be possible to construct a harddrive mp3 player for well under 100 bux... 30 for the dvd player and however much for what size harddrive you want. this would be especially convient for a vehicle becuase the dvd player has a menu system that shows the folders on an mp3 disk and it comes with a remote perfect for mounting the dvd player anywhere you want..... another cool option is that the dvd player can play vcds utilizing the menu system meaning this system could play movies as well. so you tell me is this idea even worth investigating further into or is it a dumb newbie idea.

I got halfway thru and my brain caught fire. If you are asking what I think you are asking, i am not sure but it would likely take some interesting software to make it function. Never know until you try it. Might be able to just throw the dvd's right on the drive and have it work. Good luck on your venture!
