Screen resolution

I have a 10.4in touch screen that I bought off of e-bay (3m micro touch). When I had it hooked up to my home computer (800x600 resolution) everything was fine. Now that its in my truck (800x600) the video is kind of funny somtimes. I had a friend look at it and he told me that the screen would have no problems if I ran it at 640 x 480 I would have no problems, but 800x600 is the lowerst my computer will go. My question is this: Is the resolution dependant on the software (windows) or the hardware (motherboard/video card). Also, is there anyway to change this to where I can use 640x480? thanks

I know there's another way, but I just trick Windows into using 640x480 this way. Right click on a program you're running, go to Properties, Compatibility Mode, and there's a checkbox for 640x480 mode.

My understanding is that windows recognises the resolutions your monitor and graphics card are able to achive and gives you a list of recommended resolutions avaiable. You are able to force other resolutions going into the advanced properties of you display adaptor but I wouldn't recommend it. If windows isn't letting you chose a resolution, I think you will find there is an underlying problem somewhere.

In general, you can't go for higher resolution, but you can ALWAYS go for lower resolution.
Maybe the combination of resolution and refresh rate can fix what appear to be "weird"

Damn I just noticed where you live. I am in Biloxi MS, so I am only a few miniutes from you.....

It's important to run any LCD at it's 'native' resolution (or an exact multiple of)
Otherwise it will look ****e. unlike a CRT an LCD has a fixed number of pixels.

But if it was running fine in the house, you probably have an electrical issue.
Is your VGA cable too long? (>3m)
Is the VGA cable a good quality one?
Do you have a general noise or grounding issue (search forums)
