" HI-SPEED USB device is plugged into a non-HI-SPEED USB hub" Error - HELP!!!

Okay, here is another problem that pops up on my computer and I want to know if any of you have received it and how you fixed it.

I plug in my USB 2.0 hub into the USB 2.0 port of my carputer and I get the "HI-SPEED USB device is plugged into a non-HI-SPEED USB hub" error message. I know for a fact that the hub and usb port are both usb 2.0 - why the heck am I getting this error?

For reference, I have an ATX motherboard that has USB 2.0 ports - the Epox 8K5A2+. Please help! Thanks!

Usually in order to get USB 2.0 to work at full speed you need to install the correct drivers, I bet if you installed the correct drivers it should work fine.

Check your BIOS settings. Many motherboards have options to set the USB ports to 1.1 or 2.0. It may be set for 1.1.

Guys - I have SP2 installed. Also, I double-checked my BIOS last night and USB 2.0 was enabled. I may try to update the BIOS to see if that works.

could be your hub or your cable, i got a cheap usb2 hub from japan but it would only ever detect as a usb1. i bought a better one and that would only detect as usb1 until i swapped for the cable that came with the cheap hub! strange but true!

Have you checked in Device Manager. Usually you have to manually force XP to find/install the USB2 driver after instaling SP1 or SP2.

Have you got a usb1 device plugged into your hub as well? sometimes this causes a problem..

It's not the device it's the controller. Sometimes 2 ports on a computer share the same controller. Sometimes 4 do. If a usb 1.1 device is plugged into any of the ports on a controller, the controller defaults to 1.1 and everything runs at that (crippling) speed.

This can't possibly be true...can you give me some background on this. Thanks.

Interesting suggestion. I will post a screenshot of my device manager layout for ya'll later tonight. I may do an 'update driver' on some of the controllers.

I thought this wasn't true until I tested it this weekend. I have an ATX mobo with a VIA VT8235(8325?) south bridge chipset. Your statement turned out to be completely true. When I ran a single usb 2.0 device on one port and left the other port empty (i.e. 2 ports per controller - 6 ports total on my mobo), I didn't get the popup. When I plugged in a USB 1.0 device, XP immediately brought up the dreaded icon.

I ended up finding an NEC chipset USB 2.0 PCI card and put that in the machine, it's working very well for now. I'll test more later on. Thanks for the suggestion.
