uing stock radio antenna for tv/fm reception?

just wondering if its possible at all to use the stock antenna on a car (with an adapter of course) for both radio and tv use? cuz i was looking around for some tv tuner cards and there are some pixelview cards that crossed my eye. one which was a low profile card and sent the audio straight through the pci bus. but it only has one antenna connection on it. just curious if the radio antenna would work good for tv reception?

from what i was told no the antenna isnt designed to pickup the tv signals like UHF or whatever signals u use in that part of the world

he's right.. radio is AM/FM radio signals. TV us UHF/VHF and won't work. Different radio frequencies.

xvcarpc: AM/FM is an encoding scheme. UHF/VHF is a area on the frequency dial. VHF: 30-300mhz, UHF - 300mhz+

Technically any antenna should work for receive. You might not get as strong as a signal you would like, or you may receive some noise. I'm not 100% on the noise though.

Tuned antennas exhibit a natural gain.
Tuned antennas are used for transmitting usually. you can technically receive on any antenna, but if you transmit with the wrong size antenna you can fry your transmitter.

so technically, a stock headunit antenna should work fine for tv reception as well albeit not the BEST reception seeing as the FM frequency falls inside the VHF range.

The FM antenna is designed for FM its not ment to pickup the VHF/UHF frequency.

It will of course pick up the signal but the quality is bad and a seperate powered antenna is needed for reasonable viewing when still or driving.

Lets face it no matter what antenna u have it sucks when the car is in motion.

Getting an powered antenna helps you get better reception but it will still be crappy quality.

well remember those days you could take your wire coat hanger and add it to your rabbit ear style antenna on your tv to get better reception and some times it would work...so i think it would be worth giving your radio antenna a try for tv reception.
