Mobile CPU VS Conventional CPU ??'s

I was under the impression that mobile CPU's worked exclusively with laptop motherboards. Is this true? Or would I be able to buy a regular mATX motherboard (Socket A) and then use a mobile AMD CPU? If someone could help me out soon that would be great as I have an opportunity to get the mobo I was looking at for a great price. Thanks in advance

Epox
and you will find some posts that have talk of mobile athlons
Also look up the recent(ish) thread titled "Intel or AMD" or summit like that.

MatrixPc and a few others run mobile athlons. The onlt board so far known to be able to run one without any dodgy mods is the biostar as if has full fsb and mutiplier control. The AOpen one in a thread i started today might - gonna do some more digging around for info on it.

You can get a mobile CPU. Check your motherboard specs to see if it will support a mobile processor.

The advantage to the mobile CPUs is they draw less power. that means a less expensive power supply. That means less heat. That means more accessories you can run. That means less pull off your car's electrical system.

Yes, mobile AMD socket A work with regular desktop mobo with some little trick.

Hmm... interesting. I did not have to use any trick whatsoever with my mobile athlon. I have a Mobile Athlon 2500+ and a Abit Nf7-S that worked together right away. I overclocked it to 3200+ speeds right off because it could work at higher frequencies with lower voltage and heat as it was designed as a laptop CPU. Underclocking would be very simple too.

here yo use this... I have a pretty good setup. I have a SOYO K7VME matx mobo and and amd athlon xp mobile 1400+. I'm pretty sure u could use other cpus as well. The soyo mobo is pretty good. It doesnt have 6 channel surround sound but u can always add it.

For AMD only.
Most/all full size ATX mobo that allow "overclocking" feature, can use mobile CPU without any problem. The trick is you have to setup FSB and other stuff in BIOS.
For most mATX mobo with nForce chipset, the "overclocking" feature is NOT there. So you can't do the "easy" trick in BIOS. Instead, wire modded is one of the method to make it work.

I have that Soyo K7VME (flexATX instead of mATX). This board works fine with mobile CPU cuz you can select FSB by jumper. I bought this board as a package deal with the mobile CPU and only use to test if the CPU is working.
