Controlling LCD cover

I have my lcd in my dash and i want to make a motorized cover for it that flips up and is controlled by a button in my dash.

So it would be like this:

Push Button, let go
Motor activates
Cover lifts(flips) up
...
Push button, let go
Motor activates other way
Cover shuts

I heard there is a certain kind of motor used to do that, not just a regular dc motor. And do i need to buy something to control it, or can i just make a circuit or wire it myself?

Are you referring to a servo motor? If so, you can control this using a Basic STAMP circuit or use a servo controller that is driven by the computer via the serial port.

So your saying I can take a basic stamp circuit and connect it to a button, and connect it to a servo motor, which is connected to the lid. Then when i press the button it activates the servo motor. How would it now how far to open? Is it programmable?

Yes, it is programmable. Do a Google on "Basic Stamp". Parallax makes a bunch of them. You write the program in PBasic and burn it on the chip. It then works whenever you power it up.
