Way to trick computer into giving itself an ip address?

Is there any way to trick a Win XP computer into giving itself an ip address? I need an ip address so I can VNC into the computer from a palm connected to it. The only thing is, it apparently needs an ip address to go through it.

127.0.0.1 doesn't work, because winxp won't give itself an ip address if it is not connected (says "Media disconnected" on ipconfig). localhost won't work. The computer name (yoda-one) won't work. I tried making a direct connection, still won't work. Tried making it so it will accept incoming connections. Still won't work.

Any ideas? Like a certain ethernet cable wiring that will trick it into thinking it is connected? I've searched google for hours for this.

Thanks.

If you want to do a direct connect via ethernet and you don't use a switch, hub router etc.. you have to use a cross over cable.

A crossover cable pinout is:

1 - RC+ 3 - Tx+
2 - RC- 6 - Tx-
3 - Tx+ 1 - RC+
6 - Tx - 2 - RC-

Or you could try to hard code an ip address in the PC and set it to something like 192.168.1.0. You just have to make sure you use the same IP base and subnet on both devices.

These setting should work
PC IP - 192.168.1.1
PC Subnet - 255.255.255.0

Palm IP - 192.168.1.2
Palm Subnet - 255.255.255.0

Just disable the network card, go to add new hardware, select network adapters, select microsoft, then select the microsoft loopback adapter then it wont care if the network cable is connected or not. then you can just set a ip address on it.

but if you need to reconnect the machine to a network you will have to reenable the onboard NIC

Is the palm connected through ethernet, wifi, or USB?

RJP: that's not my problem...I am not actually connected to anything, that's the problem.

jcdillin: cool...I'll try that.

HostileJava: through serial. Search for "PDA remote" to see exactly how I have it setup.

Thanks guys.

Sweeeet...thank you jcdillin...I didn't even have to remove the other connection. Just had to add the loopback. Thanks a lot.

The steps in Microsoft's article don't solve the problem, but thanks any way.

I'm curious as to why you couldn't simply assign a static IP address in this situation....
I'm glad the loopback setup worked for you, but I'm still wondering...

With W2K and XP if the autosense realises there is not a network cable connected and working it disables the network card. And therefore you cannot assign any kind of IP address. If you follow my previous link you can see how to disable the autosense.

Yes, but this still weirdly will assign 0.0.0.0, even if you manually assign an ip address. And of course, this is an invalid ip address.
