What do you guys think of this new technology? The DVpod

Well, i just came back from Directed Electronics' own training school, Snake Pit. I reccommend it for anyone who has an interest in this stuff(Mobile Electronics) but too scared to rip apart a car. Well, they had some interesting stuff coming out in terms of products.

First, is the All-in-One DVD Overhead system
http://directed.com/rse/allinone.asp

But it isnt the whole system, the catches my eye. Its a feature called the DVpod. A removable DVD drive w/ memory card reader and RCA jacks(for playing at home). so basically you can get this whole system installed in the car. Watch movies, pop it out the DVpod and plug it in to TV and watch more movies at home. Well thats only moderately cool, but then i heard a HDD version of the DVpod is coming out this summer in 20gb and 40gb flavors w/ USB2 support. I immediately thought that you guys might find some interesting things to with this. But wait, not everbody has a minivan or SUV where overheads are appropiate, some of us only want headrest and sunvisor monitors. I then asked the instructor if they had a sort of central HUB dacking station to connect the DVpod/HDpod for ppl that dont want the overhead system, he said that it was in R&D at the moment. Got me pretty anxious if you ask me.

And this thing is small, bout the length and width of a DVD case and like double the thickness. the HD is most likely a laptop drive. Maybe we can crack it open and swap it with a bigger one.

This sorta solved the problem i had with the media CarPC thing. You know, having my media trapped in my car. I dun wanna have to burn a dvd just to watch it at my friends house.

So tell me what you guys think? And feel free to ask me bout snake pit.

As far as I'm concerned, the DVPod witht eh hard drive doesn't exist until it exists. Only then will I evaluate it. Evaluating vaporware is a waste of time. It's almost like saying "wouldn't it be cool if..."

The pop-out DVD player isn't all that impressive, at least to me. I think it's a good idea to be able to take the DVD out of the vehicle, though.

Lastly, this unit only does one thing: play optical media (CDs, DVDs, etc.). We build PCs for our vehicles to do more than that in most cases. This isn't going to do GPS navigation. It's not going to have WiFi access. It's not going to enable any vehicle tracking. No solitaire on long road trips for the passenger(s).

In other words, it's just a DVD player.

I have some grief with Directed. I called them up today to see if the would send me a little piece of plastic (speaker wire terminal block), and they said it would cost me $85... What a rip off. I have a viper d600.1 and I'm content with the power it puts out but it doesn't even have a freakin' adjustable crossover; I believe it just sits at 200hz. So I have to buy one and add another possible ground loop to my system.

The removable DVD player seems kind of pointless, when you can buy a home DVD player for less than $40, but the hard drive version could be cool. However, the average bozo on the street probably won't understand it, so they won't sell enough of them. Look at the Omnifi DMP1 hard drive MP3/WMA player... it's been out for a couple of years, critics loved it, yet it didn't sell enough and now they're being liquidated. It had (has) just about every feature we could ask for from a car music player, including wireless connection for adding new tracks or scheduled downloads to your car at night. http://www.omnifimedia.com Maybe Apple will buy out the Omnifi, paint it white and call it the AutoPOD and sell a million.
