Hvac controls
Hey i'm not sure if this is the right section of the forums or not. I'm having a monitor molded into dash where the hvac controls and a storage pocket normally are. My hvac controls are gonna need relocating and i'm not electronically knowledged so i figured i may need a stereo shop to do this. Its a 1998 gmc Sierra does anyone know how involved this process is or what i can expect to pay to have these relocated so that my 8" monitor will fit? thanks for any help

Well, depends on your controls. If they are rotative buttons, it will be a little tricky but certanly not impossible. I can't tell how much it's going to cost you to do it proffesioanaly. Why not use Phidgets instead? If you have climate control, then it's only a matter of extending the wires, which could be a little tricky too.

Oh, I think that would be fairly easy. This is kind of a long shot, but I think you could use the existing cables without the need to extend them, as the distance is small.
www.phidgets.com You can use these to automate the HVAC controls though servos and a servo controller, thus controlling it through the PC.

I'd be more than willing to write an app during the summer that would control these controls. Most manufacturers have controls that are very similar to these
But I'd need the hardware

BTW- quick question aobut relocating controls - how hard is it to control a digital pot with a PIC?
also, do phidgets have controls that can move the wires? solenoids/motors I guess? Might be a nice venture.

I used to have a 97 silverado, which had those controls. You can extend the wires, but it is a complete PITA
oh, and that's a 10.4" touchscreen in there.

Did you just have to like cut the wires in the middle and add extension wire or did it require way more work than that to be able to move it?

Oh now you see the potential of my idea!
YOu could always use this to control your dials behind the dash but i suspect they would rip the knobs off (oo-er missus!)

I can think of a lot of things I would like to use those things for....
