Pentium M CPU on a regular Socket 478 Mobo?
I was looking for a low power system and found a pentium m cpu for cheap. Its a socket 478 just like a regular pentium 4 and celeron cpu are, but will it fit on a regular socket 478 mobo just like the p4 and celerons do? or will i need to modify the pins or anything? On intel's site, it says Mobile CPUs have 478 pins, but everywhere else it says 479?

Is that a p4 mobile CPU or an actual M CPU? Because the mobile P4's are 478 pins, the M's have the extra pin to keep you from using it on a normal board, but they already have an adapter, I will see if I can find the one I was looking at.

It won't work, even if the pinouts are the same.
ASUS makes an adapter that will allow it to work in certain ASUS motherboards. Check their website for details.

well the P4 mobile CPU will work on a normal board, I have one. But the M will not work without the special adapter

yup, but I am going to end up using my mobile P4 because it fits a normal board and uses less power than a normal P4, but the chips are much higher quality than a desktop CPU because intel goes and picks only the best of the die to make the mobile chips. So in turn they are higher performance than other chips that are the same speed.

No, there is not. There is a difference between Petium 4 Mobile and Pentium M, that's what jcdillin was talking about. Refer to Darque's post for the rest.

I'm confused. What exactly is the difference in the Pentium Mobile and the Pentium 4 M?

Okay, I think I've figured out the difference. The Pentium Mobile is the Banias/Dothan cores, a true "Pentium M," whereas the old mobile processors were Pentium 4's designed to be mobile, hence the "M".
I've searched for the stuff below, but need a little help still.
So, that being said, I want to pick up an old Pentium 4-M processor. How do I know what I am getting? I've been looking on ebay, but am I coming up with the right stuff? Here's a link to one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...sPageName=WDVW
Also, what boards will run the old pentium 4-m's? Will any socket 478 board run them just fine?
Thanks!

actually i've been playing with my P4 M cpu, i've been running it on a normal desktop board, the problem I have found is even though my chip is 2.26Ghz, the board only runs it at 1.2ghz. I havent been able to find a way to get it up to the higher speed. I going to try a board that allows control of the vcore to jump the CPU up to the higher speed. I just wanted to run the CPU because it's only 35W for a 2.26ghz CPU compared to the 65watts of my current 2.2 P4

After some research i found that only the new Pentium M have 479 pins the older ones have 478 pins just like the P4 but they are electronicaly different, thats why you cant use it on regular 478 mobos. I just bought a Pentium M 1.3ghz for $38 on ebay, and im going to be using it with Aopens AOpen i855GMEm-LFS board which i just ordered. According to Aopens techs and several reviews i have seen, this board supports both 478pin and the newer 479pin Pentium M chips. Newegg has the board for $215 after rebate and the also have a refurbised version for 119 without accessories.

Are you sure that board will run both 478 and 479?
