Trouble with PCI video card install ... help!!!

Hi, i have been trying to install a seperate video card to my M10000 which has the built in video. I want to improve on the video display when using an Artec usb digital receiver. I currently can pick up loads of channels but the video display is very slow and choppy compared to the sound. I thought it might be due to my mpeg decoder but i would rather have a second video card handling all video etc.

The prob is that i can jot get the card installed correctly. Have looked everywhere now (been over 2 weeks)and had no success. Heres what i am doing.

- Install new card. Boot up with onboard card and install new drivers for pci video card in Xp. Installed and checked ok.
- Power down and disconnect vga lead from on board video and connect to the new video card in the pci slot.
- Have been into my mian bios setting and altered the video adaptor to pci and not onboard
- re boot ......display shows the bios start screen of my graphics card and then i get my main bios load screens. I see windows begin to start and then all i get is a black screen.
- When i power down again and reconnect vga cable to my onboard video. everything woprks ok. It is totally doing me head i now

Does any one have any suggestions or come across any theads that might help.

Regards

alright, well if it gets through the bios stuff with video then it is obviously a windows issue, which is at least a helpful start.

if you boot it with the PCI card, after the screen goes black, have you tried switching the VGA connector back to the on-board video without restarting? if the on-board does have video in that case, then windows must be ignoring the BIOS default video device... Can you entirely disable the on-board video in the BIOS? (rather than just setting the default to PCI)

also, try enabling both displays in windows if dual-display is possible... basically see if you can get any signs of life out of the PCI card when in windows. probably easier if you have 2 monitors to hook up at the same time.

Is there a jumper or something on the MB itself to disable the onboard video? Or, as said, something in the BIOS, like under 'Integrated Peripherals' or something?

Actually. I have to wonder if that's exactly what it's doing. XP probably sees both video cards. Try this:

Boot the PC off the internal video card, and get into windows. Go into your display properties and see if it shows a second screen in the 'system' tab, then click to 'extend monitor onto screen'. Then see if it shows up.

It sounds like it's trying to do dual monitors, but you never turned on the second card in windows.

I had a simliar issue....i found a way around. If you set the bios back to the onboard and then reboot.....let it sit for a bit....it is actually booting up and will come on the screen once it reaches windows.
Not sure why but it works.
I dont see anything on mine until windows is finally started.
