CD Deck as Drive

I was wondering if it would be possible to somehow use a cd deck as a cd drive for a car computer...

For example... If I want to listen to a cd on roadrunner or some other frontend, is there some way of using a cd deck as a cd drive.

I know this sounds weird.. but any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I don't think that this would be possible...I read one post on the forum where someone was going to remote mount their faceplate of a headunit and then put a slim slot DVD behind it though.

depends on the deck. if you are lucky enough, the deck may have some standard cd-rom parts and you can just interface that with the base of a regular cd/dvd-rom.

but this is by no means easy and in alot of cases this isnt possible. just ponting out options.

You can't use it as a CD drive, but you could get your comp to control the CD deck with some hacking. Just integrating a drive like Shelbrain says would probably be easier though.

what Shelbrain mentioned really isnt hard to do as most faceplates will have an open slot for the disc to go through and into the actual headunit. so simply enough, you would just mount the optical drive as you normally would and mount the faceplate in front of that with the disc slot lined up.

of course there are also some headunits that hide the disc slot behind the faceplate so it makes things a bit more complicated. these headunits basically rotate the faceplate to show the disc slot when you want to eject or insert a disc.
