Hibernate takes longer than 45 secs, big problem!

I have the chip that cuts main computer power after 45-seconds of the car cutting off. I recently just changed my setup and now with 512MB of ram it takes a little bit longer than that to hibernate... meaning my power gets cut before it completes the hibernate.

Without having to downgrade to 256MB which will hibernate faster but my system runs so smooth with 512MB ram... can I turn off unnecessary processes/system stuff to make Windows hibernate about 5 seconds faster?

All I need is about 5 seconds, don't know if I can pull off that much savings by just turning off stuff but any help is greatly appreciated.

Just so you know my system specs: AMD XP2500+, 512MB ram, 7200rpm HDD, Win XP Pro.

Going to be tough, because hibernating means copying all the contents of RAM into the hard disk, the bigger the RAM the longer it takes.

You already have a fast rpm HD, is there a faster HD? I dont know, S-ATA or RAID are they faster?

Yes, you can, although I don't know how much of an impact it will make.
I suggest running MSCONFIG and removing anything unnecessary from startup.
You can also go into Services and shut off services you dont need/use.

If you disable enough unused stuff, you could likely shave 5sec off your hibernate time. No guarantee, though

minilogon for me shaved a good 15-20 seconds.. it skips the whole "pretty windows screens that say "logging out, saving settings, and preparing to hibernate" .. it jumps right to "hibernating"...

make sure to get the ctrl+alt+ delete program too

I am really suprised that it takes that long, I would look into disabling hardware (especially USB devices) one at a time to see if one of them is causing the holdup.

Definately look into extra services that you dont need.

Thanks everyone! I will try this out and report back with my results.

Neon_eddy, do you have a link to the minilogon program? What's the CTRL-ALT-DEL program?

ftp://files:files@69.180.167.128/sof...leminlogon.zip

read up on it in the forums here first.. it basicly logs you on as the "system" user.. the normal CTRL+ALT+DEL won't work without the extra program.. I think it's included in the zip file I linked to.

Minlogon should help, but it has its drawbacks. You may have ACPI problems as well, and need yet another program if you ever want your SDC to shut down your pc instead of just hibernate. I still think it's worth it though.

I would start by researching the services you have running. You likely don't need half of them for a cap pc. Disable or set to manual depending on importance.

It's strange that a system with your specs takes so long. Is your hdd low on space and extremely fragmented? I just timed my hibernate time, it's four seconds. Of course, I've done a bit of OS optimization.
