yup yup i'm reseaching that now. I think this is some phillips base card. I'll buy it, along iwth the mini dock, assuming i win it, and then i'm good. I won the regular port replicator, so its not neccssary. I'll review it when i get it...looks like i'm spending more money tonight...

BTW, shotgun, can i link your drivng movie in my worklogs? I want to show off what the nitemax can do, but, alas, you have the only movie i like .
As for your nephew, when the time comes, just remember one thing:
You're bigger than him.
Sure thing, link away.
I told him when I gave it to him, there was one caveat. If you ever don't want it anymore, you can't give it away
I don't mind so much, Mindstorms are cool, I love how quick it is to put things together and tear them down, but I'm fairly comfortable with PICs now.

are pics easy to learn? seiosulty i need to get confomratble with them myself. hehe, trust me...when i got the mindsotrms remote contorl, programmign went down to as little as i coudl do to get it to wrk on remote. Hten again, by then the competitions were form landrovers to pic up stuff, but still...
Drop him $5 and call it a day. i'm so mean sometimes .
Aso, this TV tuner card...it uses the phillips hcipset (gah, talk about misadverstising). Its still cehap and i don't need it to watch TV, and much less record, just to get an image of the night max on the desktop. i'm still waiting for his reply to my email.
Oh, check this out. The Levono USB docking station and the Targus are EXACTLY the same...Thinkpads are ALREADY going down hill...and i never saw T series thinkpads so cheap before. Not that i'm an elitist or anything, but that usually means that something was sacrificed

I need to pick up another docking station soon. Just got a better laptop for my setup (Inspirion 8600). This frees up the PCMCIA slot, I've been looking at I believe the same tuner. Seems like it will work on linux so..
PICs are they easy? I wouldn't say that. If you program already it makes it a lot easier. I don't really use the assembler myself (yet). Been using the light (and free) version of HITECH C.
I started off doing a lot of low end stuff ages ago on PC so while rusty, pretty comfortable. Those days, you wanted anything above 320x200x256, you had to know how to write drivers (or find them) for all the different SVGA chips. Same thing with soundcards and everything else. That sucked ***.
You could use Windows back then, but not for games or anything so that ruled that out.
A big PITA is you have to supply whatever support circuitry is needed for anything else you need unlike mindstorms where you just plug in a block.
A decent book is Programming Robot Controllers
Good examples, how to drive LEDs via PWM, RS-232 communications, LCDs, IR object detection, IR remote control, Servos and how to do it all at once using the basic interrupt facilities of the PIC16F627.
That's probably the biggest help for someone starting off. How to multitask those things with such limited resources.

Aw shucks, this is one big happy family! I'm sitting here wearing my Microchip T-Shirt (One of three) and typing this message on my Inspiron 8600 that's been here on the Dining Room Table way too long. Great minds thing alike, huh?
PIC chips rock -- I learned them way back in the early 90's and haven't had a chance to use them much lately. I work in Engineering -- mostly analog electronics because whimps and sissies can't do analog stuff and I can. The problem is the fact that it keeps me away from programming because I like to do that too.
Way back then I wrote PIC software in Assembly Language to decode data packets from a radio receiver and send them to a computer via RS-232. Did it all without ANY interrupts and a two-level stack! Yah-baby...
Last year I was able to help write code for a Texas Instruments based DSP Chip in a Metal Detector -- in Assembly Language! Needless to say, there wasn't much Tech Support from TI or thier Applications Engineers for us geeks that use Assembly!

i've got a book like that...i cant' remmeber (big surprise) what its called, except its more a whoel overview on the robot than just programming it. iT includes PICs. Crap..i wouldn't be doing that for a while then. eriously, i can't program. I could barely play chess (kicked my littel brother's butt though). I can't rmemeber what i just thought off if i think i see soemthing else. Its a wonder i could get this carputer going, but its pretty straigh forad to me:
step 1, get car
Step 2: get computer
step 3: get sound system
step 4: plug it all in
step 5 cry when it doesnt' work
step 6: visit mp3car.com.
I just skipped to step 6 from repeating step one twice. I was lazy.
Well...i guess its good we're looking at the same tv tuner. If he answers my email and i like it, let's pick it up and play with it, okay? Does it come wiht the software? BTW, what did you use to captuer the video again? Which tuner do you have? Personally, im kinda apprehensive to use a PC card TV tuner with one slot...i mean...righ tnow i have no use for it, but what if kills me sometimes:P
Also, do ou really think you can get the autoiris/IR adjustment thing to work? Have you tried riving around wihtout IRs on like htat? Anywyas, gave a shout out to ou on my worklogs . thanks agian!
and yes mark, i see you're on and watching this thread . Do you think you can elaborate on the auto iris with a plan of attack on this thing?
lol @ analog whimps. Leave us alone...we were born ears too late to not be spoiled!
@ your radio decoder- you're nuts man! Are you for hire?

Might want to look at basic stamps. Much slower than a PIC (even though it's based on a PIC) and no interrupts, but uses a Basic like language, lot's of support, add-on modules and docs and a big community. I think ratshack sells a starter kit for around $60-70.
I'll probably pick up the tuner next payday. Currently, I just used my camcorder to tape it, then an Instant DVD to capture it.
I think you might have the wrong impression about that video. The IR is only flashed for a second before leaving the parking lot. The rest is without IR.
Generating a dimming signal for leds is easy with a PIC, so is measuring voltage, so I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Yes. Yes they do.
At the moment, I like digital better as it's alot easier for someone with my fragmented understanding of electricity. A lot easier to reprogram then replace components (or worse, wait for them to ship). Hopefully that will change, I'm learning a lot more, but there's still some things that haven't gelled yet. DSP is something I'd definitely like to explore, but again for the moment, my limited skills are problematic.
It's like when I started with programming I imagine. (Hard to remember ~17-18yrs now). It all seemed like magic. "How does a computer make a decision?". It made my head hurt. Never would have guessed that it would become my job.
At least there's the Internet now instead of POKEing random memory locations to see where the video card was in memory. Learning like that was rough, but you do learn a lot.
I was thinking the other day about the new Inspirion. I could grab a dock and do the power button hack, but I was wondering about Wake on Lan.
I wonder if you could fake it with a PIC and a loopback cable. I mean without ethernet support hardware. I mean it's just one UDP packet, so you don't actually need a stack or anything. Hmm.. too many projects.

hehe, here's one project less. The seller of card that we were looking at has relpied
Dear Customer,
Thank you for your kindly information.
It supports Global PAL/SECAM TV and NTSC TV.
it is Philips OEM unit. There comes with all the softwares and accessories. you can just enjoy it.
Regards,
Vinson
MSN: vinson.yu@msn.com
i'm buying it now. ARe you going to join me?
Also, if you're going to do a project like that, i'd be interested in that as to see what i can do. I mean, i ahve the port replicator coming in for the R51, but hey, if a $10 device and priceless learning and knoweldge can do it for me, i'm all for it!

I'm holding off until next payday as I just got the new laptop etc.
I don't mind hacking up the dock (when I get one for the new model), but seems like there should be a way without hacking things up for laptop users.
I'll have to investigate a little more and see what's involved. I've done a lot of network stuff, but not on that level (timings and whatnot). Maybe a little project, maybe big. The scope will dictate when (or if) I'll get to it.

some has had to have done it before, i mean, we cna't be the first. I'll see what i can find. I mean, wake on lan is pretty much liek remote power. No way it hasnt been done before. I mean, is it that hard to to tell a PIC to send out a certain code when turned on, then turn off again?
As for the card....the seller happens to be NY based, which means, i'm not too happy with the shipping plus tax. I'll get it if the seller is willing to mark it down by, i dunno, ALOT. I mean first class or parcel post, it really doesn't matter at that distance in travel to destination.

No it should be hard at all. They have ethernet interfaces for PICs. I'd like to try it without it to make it cheap

Though PIC assembly is pretty easy. Not a lot of instructions. I can grok it, but not that fluent in it yet.
