DVR-K05 DVD Drive - spitting out the CDs

I have a pioneer DVR-K05 DVD drive installed by itself (master) on an IDE cable. My hard drive is SATA.

When I put a CD or DVD in the Pioneer it just spits it right back out. I don't know if I have a defective drive or what. Thoughts?
