Electricity through Cat5?
Just trying to think how I'm going to run my wires. Can I send electricity through Cat5 cable? If not, what's the general method for running electrical lines?
Also, I have no experience with soldering and I'm a little confused as to whhat should be done to connect two thin wires. Normally, with speaker wire I'd strip the wires then twist them together with an electrical cap, but with stuff this small I can't exactly do that. So... the above question, plus:
What kind of equipment would I need to do soldering of computer components of this nature?
How do I connect small wires?
I know these probably seem like silly qustions to some, but we all gotta learn some time...

get heatshrink tubing.
If the current you ar running is less than an amp, cat 5 wire will work just fine.

personally I never use any of those crimp style connectors.... I always solder connections then use heatshrink/electrical tape. If I do use crimp connectors (say for connecting a wire to a car chassis, etc) I bash down the crip and then solder the wire onto the connector.....
... just makes me feel better about my installs I guess! that warm fuzzy feelin!

Heh, as has been said, heat shrink tubing is good, hides even the worst sodering job (and the first few you will do probably won't be too clean ). Depending on whether its solid or stranded will make a difference, but the general consensus is that you could run up to 2+ amps on a solid core cat5, altho at that point it would be getting quite warm, and ive accidentially run 3 amps over cat5 with the wire only getting warm (the keystone cat5 jacks melted at 3amps tho ).

You might be able to pull 300-500ma off the 5vdc from the ps/2

Oh, so in other words, if I'm pulling 5v from my ps2 port to power my VFD, I should be able to run it through Cat5 with no problems?

As long as you're able to provide suitable power for the vfd from the ps/2 port, then yes, cat5 will carry said current without a problem.

It'll work... Here's a quick link... There is a company doing this as a product to be released... A new standard of-sorts to power certain devices over a CAT5 cable, with no other external power source... Sounds way cool.
