most people will tell you to search, because all of these questions have been answered, but if its an old pentium compaq, the bios settings wernt on the motherboard, but on a partition on the hd. you can search compaq's site for it. the other option is state on powerloss. come to think of it, if it doesnt turn itself on by itself when the power is restored its and atx system, meaning you get into the bios by f10.

Just a thought,

Dunno why SOMEONE said that just becasue its ATX it will use F10 to get into teh bios.. :P personally I know of no ATX motherboards that use F10. If it ain't F10, its DEL... And, yeah, resistors from each of teh colour pins on teh VGA port to ground... 75ohms I think???

All Compaqs since the beginning of time use F10 to enter the BIOS. As the computer is booting, a small square will appear in the upper right corner for a few seconds. Hit F10 at that point and it will take you into the setup.
If you cannot get into setup, it is possible that the diagnostic partition does not exist. You will need to backup your data, go to the Compaq site, download the diagnostic software, then repartition your drive with the Compaq disks.
Your monitor problem can be solved by a VGA terminator. Search the forum for more info.

Aaron actually summed it up quite succinctly. All compaqs use F10, the only compaqs that had the bios settings on a hard drive partition were AT (pentium and before) systems. at based systems will allow you (as you know) to just leave the power supply turned on by their nature. If he has to go into the bios to enable state after power loss, then its an atx system, and he should be able to get into the bios by pressing f10. Theres also the option of just mashing down keys until the system generates a keyboard error, which should tell you how to enter setup.

you have to hit f10 as soon as you turn the computer on (not as soon as you see the win98 screen) and just to be safe, hit it every few seconds until it either lets you in or gets to the win98 screen. if it gets to the win98 screen, turn it off and start hitting it again as soon as you turn it on again.

tryed it, first i get a keyboard error and then, im not sure if this has an effect, it says press f12 to do a network boot and then it goes into the win98 setup options. what next? can i disable the network boot that someone was probably using on here before me? thanks

if it has the option for f12 as a network boot, f10 is most certainly bios. have you tried clearing the bios (jumper or button) and then trying to get in? if that doesnt work, pull the cmos (watch cell) battery out and let the machine sit (unplugged, which you should do to clear the cmos too). if neither of those work, hit compaqs website, some might only have a windows app to let you change the settings (like some toshibas).
