powering the kyocera kr1

for those of you with the KR1. Where did you guys decide to mount it and how did you power it? I was thinking about mouting it in the trunk, by my amp, running another 12 volt line to the back. and then connecting the kr1 to that. Well it looks like the KR1 does not take 12v but only 5 volt. the cigerette plug car adapter it comes with looks to be a 12v to 5volt converter. So didi you guys locate another plug to the back to avoid cutting into the cord, or find somewhere to mount it in the front?

Just curious how everyone else was giving it power before I started running more power wires.

and yes i found another thread kinda talking about this. but im thinking i have alot drawing off of my m2 im not sure if i want to pull 3A of of the 5volt rail.

Well if you don't want to cut into the adaptor then you could just get a spare socket from RadioShack. You could get one that looks like a spare cigarette lighter socket with trim and all for like $7 (Pic 1), or the plain socket that would hide well for like $10. I can't find it on the website, but I used to work for those bastards, and I know it is in there inventory. Click Pic to go to RS.com

Powering KR1?

Hello, everyone. Noob here, trying to figure out the ins and outs.

Okay, I think I have a decent idea of how to power a carputer, seems to be the DC-DC route is the way to go in order to eliminate some of the problems of turning off the engine, starting it again, speaker thump, etc.

But I'm on such a tight budget that I am looking to start my carputer adventure very simply. I've already got a laptop with a wireless card (and can buy something like the Nokia N800 inexpensively), so I thought I would start with a Kyocera KR1 in the trunk.

No I've searched the boards but I can't seem to figure out how to power something that only takes 5v. I know the Kyocera already comes with a DC-DC power cord to the cigarette lighter. But how do I use that in the trunk?

I know this is probably a really basic question but so far I'm stumped. Any help?
