smart fan controller

hey guys,

just purchased this handy fan controller:
http://www.coolerguys.com/840556051558.html

it adjusts the fans' speed based on internal case temp. My new install has the computer practically hidden. my sub amp and the pc will be sharing the same space so i'm hoping that this and four 3" fans (two intake, two exhuast) will keep everything in check and minimize noise.

anyways...seems like a handy device that would be ideal for our applications

here is the writeup from that site:
Tired of that every present loud fan noise? Here is a great simple solution. The Sunbeam Pyramid Controller. Since your computer typically only runs at a fraction of the capable speed, there is no need to run your fans continuously at full speed. While other products ask you to dig into your case to make an adjustment, the Pyramid is a smart device that changes the speed of your fans automatically

* This latest 'high power' design is capable of controlling 3 to 6 fans
* Power consumption of 2.0 Amps. (24 watts total fan power)
* The fan levels will adjust automatically to the system needs.
* Several fail safe features.
* 5(five) super bright LED
* Automatic warning alarm buzzer and LED flash) on high temperature.
* Lighted enclosure in a clear case
* 4 Pin Molex connector / pass-through

i wondered about using these

how does it detect the temperature? is it just a sensor in the box, or does it have temp leads that you can mount different places?

i guess it's a temp sensor at the tip of the pyrimid. I wonder if it can be hacked or if it's just really small and can fit anywhere.I guess i'll find out soon enough

rofl, someone should hack an ir temp gauge

point it at the cpu, and adjust fans accordingly

ok let me explain.. old fans had 2 wires..just voltage.
then came the 3 wire fans.. voltage + RPM sensing..
however you can find fans with 4 wires..voltage+RPM+temp sensor.
they are used mostly in industrial situations. the fan is internal i think
