What's the point of the gps if it isn't running while you are driving?
To me you are supposed to be able to glace over and see that your turn is coming up.

mp3car system is currently FUBAR and finances do not allow for a correction of that situation

No no.. i fully understand..
My point is that they are sayin you shouldn't use a gps. (they = people who say/make law that you can't have the screen on)
What I thought would be more ideal, if you are allowed to have a gps but not a video screen, some how rig it so only your gps can be displayed while the car is moving.
I dunno, I just woke up, if it makes sense then cheers, if not then simply ignore me

jsut try to think of all the standards for safety that would have to be guaranteed for this thing to be sold in the US.
Existing LCD systems connect to the handbrake by a single wire to ground. On my Kenwood display this stops me watching TV whilst moving, but I can view the interface for the CD player and tuner, and view the GPS display. This certainly is not complex and can easily be used in any vehicle.
If a system is released that lets you watch movies whilst moving, its not the manufacturer breaking the law, its you for watching the movie whilst driving.

this was in the chicago sun-times this morning: car tv fines
i was ****ed when i saw the headlines, but after reading the article it only applies to screens that recieve broadcast video. i guess that could be expanded to include movies as well, but there is probably no chance that this will expand to include gps and radio interfaces...

I'm working on something like this, but for running datalogging software instead of playing MP3s. Most people just use a laptop and throw it on the passenger seat. I'm trying to find a way to bull a full DC-powered PC cheap enough that they could permanently mount it in the vehicle, out of the way... I'm at about $320 right now, not counting the regulator for the DC-DC PSU or a screen.
Besides trying to convince people to buy this and bolt it in instead of a laptop that they can use just about anywhere, options seem to be the biggest issue. Some have screens already for other stuff. Some want small ones. Some want big ones. Some want a full multimedia setup. Some want just enough computer to run the monitoring software. Some want to buy it and drop it in. Some would rather install their own OS rather than pay me for something they already have.
Marketing something like this for a mass market usually means cutting out features some people want and giving them others they don't need. When you can build a whole system for $100, that won't be an issue. But for now, most of the people doing this want to buy something that does exactly what they want.

That's an interesting article MP3z24....
I agree with the guy. Cell phones are causing a **** load of accidents, and it is more than just holding the phone, it is that people get distracted from the conversation to. Plus those people that can't talk without waving there hands around.
I personally HATE people who talk on the phone while they are driving. Is it really necessary. How did they live before they had a cell phone... Just wait till you get home... People survived and flurished for years without being so tight for time that they had to carry on conversations in the car.
I also noticed in the article that Texas (where I live) already has such a law. First off I have an LCD with DVD and TV tuner, so I can do what they say I can't... but it doesn't distract me... It is chatter, the TV reception is so bad, the only point is for the sound. The news, etc......
Movies I have on DVD I have seen so many times I don't need to watch the pictures, I again just listen to the sound. Now I will admit the GPS does distract me. It is still a new toy for me so I try and watch it, I need to stop doing that. But I think from what I read GPS is not illegal.
Plus if I ever get pulled over I have a switch to turn the screen off, it is mounted in the dash and looks pretty close to stock and when off doesn't really stand out. And I challange any cop to be able to figure out how to use my system to provide i was breaking any law.
Just let the bastards try....
Sorry for the length....

I got the indash screen for dscustoms.. very nice.. you see the lights flashing behind you just tuck it away. Unless he says "son can you press that nondescript bit in your console and let me see if a screen pops up out of it" then i should be fine

Panic Button
GPS are legal to have visible to the drive in most states.
If you are one of the weirdos who is watching TV or Movie while driving, simply have a panic button if a cop comes...it takes him a long time to stop, get out of the car, and then come up....he walks up and a GPS mapping system is visible... no problems.

My take on it is that this is a hobby for me, making it a business ruins the fun! I used to play online vid games till it became my job doing shoutcast's of the big tourney's on OGL and TP and playing in the tourney's, but it started to suck because it wasn't fun anymore, it was my job. This is a good hobby and I'm planning on keeping it that way so I enjoy doing it!

Not sure if he is planning to go into production or not, but he does have a prototype going, and I believe it is around $400-$600US.

Hey guys this is fun ... in my country (India) no one is bothered if you watch TV or have sex while driving as long as you dont bang the car cause once you do then they start to question you.. else everything is fine.
Matter of fact one cant really bang a car here cause there is no space to speed that much .. that why wearing a sealt belt is also not a law here .. that besides the point 80% of the cars dont have seat belts .. AIRBAGS ...never heard of that wat is it ?
