Mounting a hard drive (no, not in that sense!)
Can anyone confirm if it makes a difference whether a hard drve (laptop one) is positioned horizontally or vertically in a case? I'm guessing horizontal is preferred as that is how hard drives normally seem to be but I want to know if sticking it vertically will impede its performance or cause it problems.
Cheers!

people have been doing it both ways with no measurable performance or stability issues arising

No, it doesn't make a difference.
Search the forums. There are tons of threads about this very topic, and they all come to the same conclusion: It doesn't matter, just like the points on Whose Line Is It Anyway.

Has anyone mounted one diagonally?
Best of both worlds, perhaps?

Just guessing, but I'd imagine the worst of both worlds. I'd think having it parallel or perpindicular would be better, but who knows.

Yes, that would cause the fluid to drain to the bottom of the harddrive...and cause the head to hit the disk on bumps...

what are you talking about..
you can mount hard drives vertically, horizontally, upside down, the 'liquid' wont drain to one side :/

No idea on that, but I'd think having it angled might cause problems over time just due to gyroscopic forces, but again, no idea really, just a hunch.

well, i have no idea about the diagonal either
but the liquid would move? give me a break
but, in theory, if its gonna have shock problems, it'd be worst on horizontal no? then gravity's at its strongest with the arm and head being farthest its mounting point

The oil in the ball bearings is going to give into gravity and move down to one side of the drive when it's turned off. I'm not saying it's going to cause your HDD to crash, it's just one of the theoretical negatives of mounting a drive vertically.

I'm probably talking out of my *** here, but I'm thinking more of the platters rotating and I haven't disected an HD in awhile, but I'd assume they have much more mass than the arm and head.

well thats true, but im not personally worried about the platters touching..
from pics ive seen, they're pretty thick, i'd be more worried of the head hitting one of the platters

I was thinking more the motor burning out or the platters oscillating (sic) and contacting the heads.
