Forget the shuttle, check out its heatsink
As Slashdot reported, there's a new shuttle out, which I didn't really give a crap about. But look on the second page at their completely silent CPU heatsink.
http://www.viahardware.com/ss40g_1.shtm
Wonder if I can buy that seperately.
Discuss.

There are lots of places you can get silent heat sinks and near silent cpu fans+heatsinks. I think the fans are around 18Db's which is nearly impossible to hear anyway. I think they start at like $30ish.

Not to sound like a jackass, but...
I THINK the human ear can not hear any thing below 20Dbs (20 vibrations a second). So, yes you can not hear an 18Db fan.
OK maybe I did sound like a jackass.

One good site is
http://www.endpcnoise.com/
They have silent cpu fans for around $35. I'd recommend and use one of these in my truck. Mainly because the stock heat sink and fan you get with a CPU is very very cheap and My truck gets hot in the summer and i ant something that won't die on me or begin to slow down.
You can also get good heatsinks without a fan depending on how fast and what type your CPU is.
That site i posted above is great for silent anything I also use their silent case fans and silent power supply. The cpu fan and PS have always been the loudiest for me in the past. My hearing might not be as good as other people but when my computer is on in my truck i don't even notice its on. Its right behind me too.

We're coming at this from 2 different sides. I don't care how quiet it is, I was just interested in how well that heatsink and heat-exchanger cooled the CPU. Have you seen those coolers that are on the new Shuttle sold anywhere?

Coolermaster makes the heatpipes those are really good and do a damn good job. I'm not sure where you can get it with the radiator. I've never seen that before.

Well, I went from sounding like one to looking like one.
Thanks Rob, for putting me in my place. LOL.
I stand corrected. I knew it was 20 something at least...

In all honesty, spend your money elsewhere, its going in a CAR right? Do you really think youll hear a fan back there? Even if you mount it in the dash, you wont hear it
And on a sidenote, screw all these little 'computer mod sites' that have been popping up lately...

bigger is better. so is more CFM.... get a delta, not a whining little 60mm, i'm talking a 80 mm. I have an 80 mm delta 7000 rpm @ 100 cfm on an alpha pal8045 heatsink. for an intake i have a 92 mm Delta which does 112 cfm. those run at about 58 decibels. i cant hear whats going on because the computer is on the riught side of my desk and so is the door. it works like a noise sheild, i cant sleep without the damn thing on anymore. love the hum. oh yeah, 2 cheesy 80 mm exaust fans, and the fan in the PSU (thats my home system).
car only has a 60 mm fan and then the exaust from the keypower (pretty loud, in the back of my 4runner, i put the cargo "sheild" (for lack of a better word for it) over and can here it with engine off, turn it on and no more noise.

yeah I modified my CPU fan in my home system...... removed the 7200rpm fan, replaced it with a BIG 80mm fan (like the ones in PSU's) and purchased an adaptor for the existing heatsink... since the 80mm only spins at 25000rpm it means alot less noise but moves the same amount of air.... = quiter system fan...
I do like that heatsink tho Gutter, would love to get one... good find.

i just installed a delta fan in my home system last week. dropped my cpu temps down from 137 to 120's. or 105 when the case is open (amd 1.4 @ 1.45 t-bird). and man is that delta loud! i may change it back due to the loudness.

Yeah, I have two 120mm Sunon fans in my tower that put out 45db a piece. They're the reason I always wear headphones while at the computer.
