Installing DVD drive in car

I want to put my DVD drive in my car where my CD player is. I'm guessing Fry's would sell extension IDE and power cables.

Can anyone give me any tips or direct me somewhere to go with instructions of doing this, I just don't want it to be skippin all the damn time.

Also, I drive a Honda Civic Si, 1989 and was wondering if anyone out there has this model, or the CRX obviously.

I wanted to know where they put their screens on their dashes.

I hope it is a laptop drive. I have not had much luck with cd drives for this project. A CD exploded in one drive.(see my off topic post)
The second drive has developed a very bad clicking noise when it spins up. I had it loose and pluged in to the mobo to install Windows ect.. My Dad wandered in, saw the drive. Picked it up!. Tipped it sideways, and the gyroscopic effect of the spinning disk ripped the drive out of his hand. and caused the disk to unseat itself and become unreadable.
So pick a drive that will be tolerant to external forces. Laptop drives need the CD to be firmly 'clicked' in place. I have no experience with laptop DVD/CD drive, but IMHO this is probably the best way to go.

I would love to know how Headunits go about disk location.
I have never seen inside one, CD autochangers have a rubber mounted cradle to support the disk and lense.

Let me know how it goes, I think DVD may me an optin for my next iteration.

I am using an old Creative DVD6240E (6x) DVD drive, which is an OEM version of Hitachi GD-2500BX. It was part of the Creative Encore combo (came with DXR3 card), but it was sold separately too.
I have it hard mounted in my case and I have to say that it's obsolutely trouble free. Never skipped a frame - never froze the picture, not even for a second no matter how bad the road I was driving was.
I have tried many brands and could say that if you want something reliable, go for a Hitachi drive (unless you want a slot loading one, since you gonna put it in your dash).

If the computer is located behind the dash then you might be able to do the long ide cables, but if its located anywhere else (most likely situation) I would look at usb dvd drives, or an ide to usb adaptor, this would probally eliminate the headaches of long ide cables, aslo 40 conductor ribbon cable can get expensive in long runs! Also the usb is sheilded whereas you would probally need to sheild the ribbon cable.

I havent tryed either, altho I want to Im waiting till i get my eclipse before I do anything cause ive kinda hit the wall on my truck.

Standard USB is not fast enough.

Your options are firewire, USB 2, or scsi..

I used a 15 foot 80 wire IDE cable and it works perfect.

Paid 16 buks for it. Has been running a Pioneer 16xs slot load vertically mounted in my handrest for 3 months perfectly.
