Mach,
That's exactly the problem. People ahve been trying to find a way to make windows read only like you can with linux so you don't wear out the flash.

I agree using windows would burn out a CF pretty quickly.

The flash drive sounds like a great alternative as long as it does not have a limited life likfe CF. Hope someone can confirm.

why dont you just have a data hard drive and put the swap file on that, and run the OS on the CF. (also, store everything else on the hard drive...mp3s, programs, backup of CF..etc)

or you could just disable the swap file and have a lot of ram.

Windows will still constantly read and write from the flash, and if you drive a lot, it'll probably be worn out in a matter of months, if not weeks. That's just how Windows is. You really need to be able to make the filesystem RO if you want to get any mileage out of a flash drive.

Ok guys.. Here is my idea, and I *THINK* it should work..

Have a harddrive on D: and install windows on to D:

Set it up however you want..

Now, copy this installation onto a seperate directory on the flash drive

On the flash drive, have a Windows 98 DOS bootup that will basically make a ram drive on D: and copy all the files over.. on startup and then just run d:\windows\win.exe which will be on the ram drive..

I realize this will take a while to COPY and then to LOAD but I'm thinking this is one of the only good ways to make windows not kill the flash drive quick but still get fast boot times.. I might try this out with win98lite, and if it works out kick ***! Have a seperate harddrive on E: or something I guess to have all your normal progs..

The flashdrives have a lifespan of 300,000 read/write cycles. Couldn't find that data anywhere on sandisks site tho, someone in the fs/ft forum linked the following spec sheet pages:
