2 sound cards = drive->MP3 passenger-> movie?

If i have 2 sound cards how do i setup winamp to play through one sound card and for example windows media player or powerDVD to play through another??? is this possible?

im not to sure about this one, but you can configure winamps sounddevice if you are using the nullsoft waveout plugin (choose configure and you will have a selection of avail soundcards).

i dont know how to configure the mediaplayer, but it will only one of the, so configure winamp to use the other

I do however have one question what if you want the change it so the movie sound uses the other soundcard(and ditto for winamp) ???

Were you intending on using it as a fixed system always winamp on one and always movie on the other ??

Open up control panel, find the multimedia options (in win9x I believe it's just "multimedia," and in win2k it's "sounds and multimedia"). Find where it says "Sound Playback" and under "Preferred device," select the sound card you want media player to use. Then open up winamp and set the output plugin to use the other sound card.

Set up like this, any windows sounds will get routed directly to the first sound card (that you specified), leaving the second card open, and winamp will only ever use it. Depending on the sound card, though, if you try to do two things like, say, you're playing a movie and windows plays a stupid sound, the second sound will be outputed on the second sound card (providing winamp isn't already playing) and won't allow winamp to play until after it is finished. Of course, you *probably* will never have this problem (I'm just sort of explaining how things work in this situation).

But yeah, I'm going to do a similar setup, where winamp will use one sound card played through the car speakers, while GPS will use another sound card that will play through the speakers on the video display.

Dammm I just found out that my onboard audio AUTOMATICALLY disables itself when another sound card is detected...watdaaa...... even if i go to bios enable it...when I boot to WinMe, it's back to disabled in BIOS. Does anyone know why this happens???

try goin to add harware in windows and then just add sound device and point to drivers, even if windows doesnt find it when it searches. u may beable to add it again

this is common...... all the onboard mobo's ive come across in the last five years or so all suffer the same problem.....

you SHOULD be able to install two normal "non-onboard" sound cards though....

Normal? I've used four or five mobos with onboard sound and none of them have disabled onboard sound when another sound card was detected. I have a hard time believing the BIOS could even tell that a sound card is detected (it's hard to tell the difference between something like a sound card and a DVD decoder card). Prolly something with WinME (oh yes, now isn't winme great?--no).

Windows Millenium Edition is definitely the worst OS out of MS in many years.

Oh yeah, and did you try putting your sound card in a different slot? Maybe there's a resource conflict and that's why it is disabled.

well that goes to say that onboard sound SUCKS! i'm never gonna buy a mobo with onboard sound.

well in the case of the boards I have used the BIOS has diabled the sound card, thus having nothing to do with the OS. Also the BIOS detecting a sound card.... all PCI devices have an ID code describing the function the card performs. "Multimedia Device" is the common title for a sound card from memory.

so to say you don't know HOW a bios could detect the sound card I KNOW that can be done, and is done..

Be glad your onboard sound didn't work (yet). It is bad quality, even for MP3's.. At least my gf's Tekram board.

I am using the onboard soundcard of my Supermicro's 370SED motherboard and I can't tell any difference comparing it with an add on one. I guess it depends on the motherboard...
Tech^Cellfish: Replace first the cassete adapter then look for a quality soundcard :-)
