I wish . .I bought a $50 CeleronM 410 from new egg. The PC wont post. The 478 is missing two pins for aligment where as the 479 is only missing one pin. ****es me off becase I IM'd NewEgg support before I bought it and they said that I wouldnt have a problem.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_479
It uses a different pin-arrangement from socket 478, making it impossible to use a Pentium M in a normal 478 board.

The reason they call one 479 is so that people can easily pair them. the two 478 sockets (478, 479) look almost all the same. original 478 has the two pins missing on the corner. Like this:
And 478 version two (a.k.a. 479) it has it on a diagonal like this:
They are NOT compatable whatsoever.

They are both 478 pins, you can count them if you want, but you need to find a socket 478 CPU that fits into mobile sockets. That is the kicker.

2k1Toaster,
Thanks for your prompt responce, but now Im confused, in your first post you said that the 479 and the 478 were the compatiable then you said "They are NOT compatable whatsoever"
Both of the pics you have attached are different from the socket on my board. The chips you have attached have a pin count of 478 yet the socket on my board has a pin count of 479
I followed the link to ebay and both of those chips have a fsb of 400 and Im looking for a 533fsb. What am I missing

Well I said the chips were the same pin not compatable. It was justto help you find the chips better. Because the mobile chips are listed under 478 and most people only search for 479, and find nothing.
Now your socket is weird. You say it is an itx board, but are you sure it is not a laptop? That socket looks like a laptop mobile processor which is different yet again. There are desktop and laptop versions of these chips.
Can you post a link to your motherboard?

the pin layout matches your picture, and the fsb is 533. And it is a pentium not sloweron.

Yep it uses the low power mobiles (which may sound repetitive but there is a difference). The one I linked to will work.

Look at page 41 and 46. There you will find the difference: http://download.intel.com/design/mob...s/25261203.pdf
The 478 pin version of the 479, is called the Micro-FC PGA, and the 479 pin version of the 479, is called the Micro-FC BGA.
And the u-FCBGA has a NC pin on it for some reason, so it actually only has 478 functioning pins, but 479 gold connects.

And I am glad you posted this, because this is the exact board I was thinking of getting. I was under the impression that it used regular M chips, but no no no, that would be too easy!

If you have a board with the i852/855 or i915 chipsets you need a Celeron M 3xx series chip or a Pentium-M. There are no 533 bus Celeron-Ms in the 3xx series, so if you need that you have to go to a Pentium-M 7x0 series chip.
And that is a mobile socket. It looks just like the one on my Commell boards, except on a different color PCB. Part of the problem here is that there is no physical difference between the socket used for Banias and Dothan core chips and the ones for Yonah and Merom. Electrically they are different, but the plastic bits fit both types of chip.
