Painted wood to match other plastic in Durango

I am going to build a consolve for my screen. What products do you recommend to use to paint it to match my charcoal vinyl in my dodge durango.

That is my old screen, I need to change the angle. The vinyl that I put on there was kind of spendy and I would like it to match the charcoal plastic in the rest of the vehicle.

Any suggestions welcome!

I colormatched some paint to a piece of my dash

I just used primer and exterior house paint, been holding up fine.

Well as you saw in mine, I had my paint custom matched to the T...what makes it more difficult to make is the sheen and the texture, which can actually make the color look a slight bit different. You can learn from my little mistakes.
First off you should pull off a piece that you want matched, bring it in and have them match it, (test it by putting a little paint on the sample piece that you want match, dry it, and you be able to see if it is perfect, if it dissappers, it is. You should get a satin sheen, which I used.
Second what I wished I would have done is go to the junk yard and pull off some dashboard or part of something flexable with the texture you want.
Fill in the cracks (bondo) ,sand the ***** out of it, prime it, and paint a few coats, and on the third coat or so, take some of that sample texture and use it as a stamp. Push in on there and leave it. That should give you the texture you are looking for.

Being I worked in a paint store for 3 years and was a painter (and still dable), I know a bit about it.

But will I be the first one to have a 10.4" capasative touch screen in a Dodge Durango?? hehe!! I had to throw that in too!

Oh I'm sure you're the first. I saw the pic of your screen and its current angle and the new angle you want it. Have you actually tried to look at the screen at the new angle you want? Can you see the screen clearly? Most LCDs have their prime angle even though its viewable from different angles. If you want to spend the time, you can build a center console with round corners, texture coated and matched to the rest of your dash. The basic run down is

place the monitor exactly where you want in your console and find some way to hold it like duct tape or back straps, build a frame around the monitor and the lower center dash panel. Once the frame is built, pull the frame out and the lower center dash panel, re-attach the frame and dash panel. Make sure its in a position where you and easily re-install back to the dash. Once the frame is built, use speaker grille cloth and streach over the frame and dash panel. brush on about 4-6 layers of fiberglass. Once the fiberglass is dried, carpet it. Make sure you carpet it nicely and evenly with no wrinkles. Once you carpet it, fiberglass the **** out of it. Once the fiberglass is dried, it'll as hard as a rock. It wont crack as easy. Then start sanding to as flat as possible. Dont worry about air bubbles. Once its sand smoothly, apply a couple of layers of resin with alot of hardener. Once the resin dries, sand the surface to as flat as possible then wet sand to as smooth as possible. Once you're done, primer it to see the uneven spots. apply a thin layer of resin if you have to. Once its even, primer it again and wet send smoothly. The final steps are texture coat it and color match it. When its done, it'll look like Dodge built it except it is to your spec. It probably takes a week working about 2-3 hours a day. Anyway, if anyone find this post offensive, ill edit it.

Of course I have tried the screen at the new angle. If it worked at the old angle of the unit I would not be redoing it.

I have been using my system with some spacers holding it just how I have it in that one pic. Its works excellent.

THe old angle everything looked good and I was going to keep it at that angle, UNTIL....I played a DVD...DVD looked really dark. I angled it the new way and now EVERYTHING is crisp and clear.

SEM texture coating. I got my at the local fabric store. Not the kind of fabric store that sells clothing materials. The kind that sells unbacked carpet, vinyl, foam for automotive use. If you cant find it, try this http://vinylpro.safeshopper.com/15/198.htm?264

The texture will not match the dash exactly but close enough. Dont go trigger happy cuz it'll run like crazy. Spray it at about 18 inches away. Dont cover the panel with texture coating. A suggestion...

Have it sprayed with bedliner to match your dash. Mine cost me 50 bucks and was done in half a day. Water won't hurt it, and it will not scratch unless you like take a hammer and chisel to it.

Thats stuff might be a little too much texture. My interior looks nothing like that stuff. Good idea as far as scraching and stuff though! :-)

Ah too bad, it matches the dash on my truck very well. Its hard to tell from the pics actually. I'll take some better ones tonight so you can see.

The color may be similar, but the texture doesn't match does it? The texcture on bedliners is a lot more course than plastic that I have seen in any dash...

Or did you dulute the stuff somehow??
